Possible Implications of Sagittarius Type Dwarf Galaxy on Microlensing Towards the Large Magellanic Cloud

چکیده

The discovery of the Sgr dwarf galaxy shows that the Galactic halo contains large clumps which are not full viralized. This may change implications of observed microlensing events towards the LMC. If more than one such systems are hidden in the Galactic halo, then given their enormous angular size, there is a significant chance for any line of sight, say the LMC direction, to intersect one of them. I use parameters of the Sgr dwarf galaxy to demonstrate that a foreground dwarf galaxy can provide much more micro-lenses than an isothermal dark halo of massive compact objects (MACHOs). As an alternative to the half-MACHO dark halo model, I discuss a model with lenses of the observed events being faint stars in a hidden Sgr-like disintegrated dwarf galaxy in the line-of-sight path to the LMC.

HI observations towards the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy

We have measured the λ21 cm line of Galactic H i over more than 50 square degrees in the direction of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The data show no evidence of H i associated with the dwarf spheroidal which might be consider analogous to the Magellanic Stream as it is associated in both position and velocity with the Large Magellanic Cloud. Nor do the H i data show evidence for any ...

The white dwarf population of tri-axial haloes

The nature of the several microlensing events observed by the MACHO team towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is still a controversial subject. Substellar objects and stars with masses larger than ∼ 1M⊙ have been ruled out as major components of a Massive Astrophysical Halo Object (MACHO) Galactic halo. Stars of near half-solar mass, in particular white dwarfs, appear to be the best candida...

A Prescription for Building the Milky Way’s Halo from Disrupted Satellites

We develop a semi-analytic method for determining the phase-space population of tidal debris along the orbit of a disrupting satellite galaxy and illustrate its use with a number of applications. We use this method to analyze Zhao’s proposal that the microlensing events towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) might be explained by an appropriately placed tidal streamer, and find that his scena...

Is the Large Magellanic Cloud Microlensing Due to an Intervening Dwarf Galaxy ?

The recent suggestion by Zhao (1996) that the microlensing events observed towards the Large Magellanic Cloud are due to an intervening Sgr-like dwarf galaxy is examined. A search for foreground RR Lyrae in the MACHO photometry database yields 20 stars whose distance distribution follow the expected halo density profile. Cepheid and red giant branch clump stars in the MACHO database are consist...
