چکیده

OBJECTIVE To compare craniofacial differences between twins discordant for surgically repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP) during the developmental ages and to test the effect of zygosity on the shape and size of the craniofacial skeleton of the same twins by means of thin plate spline (TPS) analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Lateral and posteroanterior (PA) cephalometric films from 19 sets of monozygotic (MZ) twins (15 male and 4 female) and 10 dizygotic (DZ) twins (7 male and 3 female) were analyzed. TPS analysis evaluated statistically significant differences in the craniofacial shape and size between affected and unaffected twins within MZ and DZ twin couples. RESULTS No statistically significant differences in craniofacial shape or size between CLP and non-CLP MZ or DZ twins were observed. The level of morphological similarity in CLP vs non-CLP MZ twins was statistically greater than in DZ twins. CONCLUSIONS Morphometric analysis showed that surgically repaired CLP does not produce significant shape or size differences in the craniofacial features of MZ or DZ twins discordant for unilateral CLP.

Discordant MZ twins with cleft lip and palate: a model for identifying genes in complex traits.

Monozygotic (MZ) twins may be discordant for complex traits due to differential environmental exposure in utero, epigenetic variability in imprinting, X chromosome inactivation, or stochastic effects. Occasionally MZ twins may be discordant for chromosomal and single gene disorders due to somatic mosaicism. For complex traits, which are due to the interactive effects of multiple genes and envir...

Effects of Tongue Plate on the Nasomaxillary Complex of Patients with Unilateral Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate

Background and aim: Cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common orofacial abnormalities. Patients with these deformities commonly present with midface deficiency and need challenging treatment modalities that focus on improving the position of the maxilla. Tongue plate appliance is an intraoral device that has shown promising results in the treatment of growing patients with maxillary ...

Ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defects-cleft lip/palate (AEC) syndrome in monozygotic twins: two cases report and reviews.

Ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defects-cleft lip/palate (AEC) syndrome (or Hay-Wells syndrome) is a rare congenital malformation. Our first cases were a pair of female monozygotic twins with AEC syndrome at Srinagarind Hospital. In this study, we describe monozygotic female twins concordant for ankyloblephaon, ectodermal dysplasia and helical rim deformities, but discordant for cleft, syndactyly of...

Language Sample Analysis of Children With Cleft Lip And Palate: A Comparative Study

Background: Cleft palate (CP) with or without cleft lip (CL/P) are the most common  craniofacial birth defects.  Cleft lip and palate (CLP) can affect children’s communication skills.  The present study aimed to evaluate the language production skills in regards to morphology and syntax (morphosyntactic) of children with CLP . Method: In current cross-sectional study, 58 Persian-language child...
