The production of fatty livers in rats on threonine-and lysine-deficient diets.

چکیده
While studying the nicotinic acid-tryptophan relationship in rats on low casein rations containing choline (2), yellowish livers were observed on autopsy. These livers upon analysis were found to contain 16 per cent lipide. When an amino acid mixture containing threonine, valine, and histidine was added to the ration, normal liver lipides were found. A systematic study of the effects of these amino acids indicated that the fatty livers were the result of a suboptimal intake of threonine and could be prevented by the inclusion of adequate amounts of the amino acid in the diet. Similar results have been obtained with amino acid diets simulating the low casein rations. The possibility that deficiencies of other amino acids might lead to a similar abnormal accumulation of liver lipides was investigated. Under certain dietary conditions suboptimal intakes of lysine, tryptophan, and leucine resulted in fatty livers. The results of the threonine and lysine experiments are presented here.

Fatty Acid Composition of Portal Fatty Liver in Lysine- and Threonine-deficient Rats.
The fatty acid composition of total lipids, neutral fat, and phospholipids in liver of rats fed low protein rice diets deficient in and supplemented with lysine and threonine has been studied to extend the knowledge of the chemical composition of portal fatty liver. More linoleic acid and less 20 : 4, 20 : 5, and 22 : 6 in percentage of fatty acids was found in total liver lipids in lysineand t...

I . Adult rats were fed on diets free of either lysine, methionine, threonine or protein. The threonineand protein-deficient animals lost weight at approximately the same rate, about IOO g in 14 weeks, at which time several were moribund. In contrast, lysine-deficient animals lost only about 3 0 g in 14 weeks and had lost only46 g after zz weeks, when they were killed. Methioninedeficient anima...
متن کاملThe effect of threonine deficiency on the synthesis of some phosphorus fractions in the rat.
Rats on diets containing suboptimal amounts of threonine or lysine have been observed to develop fatty livers, which could be controlled by adequate dietary levels of these amino acids (2). Choline was also lipotropic, but only at high levels, at which its activity was still limited in extent. The liver lipide pattern in these amino acid deficiencies was found to be suggestive of that observed ...
متن کاملAntilipotropic effect of methionine in rats fed threonine-deficient diets containing choline.
In previous studies (l-5), dealing with the effects of different amino acids on fat deposition in the livers of rats fed low protein diets containing choline, 9 per cent casein diets have been supplemented with either methionine or cystine. Fat accumulates in the livers of animals fed this basal diet but in a preliminary experiment, in which the sulfur amino acids had been omitted, no excessive...
متن کاملLipid metabolism in fatty liver of lysine- and threonine-deficient rats.
Rats were fed a low protein diet deficient in and supplemented with lysine and threonine. Liver lipids contained more lecithin, sphingomyelin, and free fatty acids, and less amino phospholipids in the deficient rats. No variations in fatty acid composition of choline- and ethanolamine-containing phospholipids were found; only palmitic acid was increased in the serine-containing phospholipids of...
