Injection of Serum in Cholera

I have just read, with great pleasure, Dr. Macnamara's very able work ou cholera, and hail it as a great step towards rescuing the disease from the misty region of conjecture which has hitherto led to haphazard efforts for its prevention and treatment; In his theory of the disease, however, I feel inclined to object to the statement that "the epithelium being destroyed, the serum of the blood is allowed to drain away from the capillary arteries of the intestines." This appears unscientilic almost to the last; however thick the blood may be, the passage of serum continues into a bowel full of dilute fluid.
