Splenic functions in thalassemia major.

چکیده
Platelet and factor VIII (F-VIII) storage and phagocytic functions of the spleen were studied in 15 patients with β-thalassemia major who were not splenectomized and in 7 patients with Hb-S-b-thalassemia. Eight splenectomized patients, 4 patients with b-thalassemia major, and 11 healthy children served as controls. F-VIII elevation following adrenalin was not found to be a sensitive index in the evaluation of “functional hyposplenia.” No fuctional derangement of the organ was shown in the patients with b-thalassemia major. However, one of the tests showed that at least 30% of the patients had functional hyposplenism. Higher platelet counts were observed in the patients without palpable spleen, and the independence of the splenic functions were shown.

Comparison of Captopril with Enalapril on Improvement of Systolic and Diastolic Heart Functions in Asymptomatic Patients Over 10 Years Old with Beta- Thalassemia Major
Background: Beta-thalassemia major is a severe and lethal hemolytic anemia. Regular transfusion is necessary for avoidance of its complications but it may end to cardiac involvement secondary to iron overload. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) are useful medications even in early stages of heart failure. We studied the effects of two common ACEIs on improvement of heart function ...
متن کاملPartial Splenectomy in the treatment of an adult with β thalassemia intermedia: A case report
Introduction Thalassemia is a common disease which treatment is often based on splenectomy. The risks associated with total splenectomy stimulated partial splenectomy as a potentially alternative therapy. Case presentation A 45 year-old female patient with long term follow-up for β thalassemia intermedia started to develop signs of hypersplenism and iron overload. A partial splenectomy was pe...
متن کاملCombined Therapy with Deferiprone and Desferrioxamine as Compared to Desferasirox on Ventricular Function in Thalassemia Major Patients
Abstract Background Myocardial iron overload is the leading cause of death in patients with beta-thalassemia major. Combined therapy with deferiprone(DFP) and desferrioxamine (DFO)were suggested to be more effective than deferasirox(DFX) for removing heart iron. Deferasirox has recently been made available, but its long-term efficacy on cardiac function has not yet been established. Our study...
متن کاملThe Correlation of Ferritin and Leptin Serum Levels with Cardiac Involvement in Thalassemia Patients Compared to Controls
Background Regarding abnormalities in thalassemia major (TM) patients and the effects of leptin and ferritin on heart, aimed to investigate the possible relationship between leptin, ferritin and cardiac involvement in TM patients compared to controls. Materials and Methods In total 141 individuals entered to the present case-control study that consisted of 66 TM patients matched in ag...
متن کاملEvaluation of relationship between biochemical parameters and osteoporosis in patients with β-thalassemia major
Background: Osteoporosis is one of the late complications of β-Thalassemia major. The pathogenesis of osteoporosis depends on different factors. Ineffectiveness of hematopoiesis is the major factor, and the other factors are defected by hormonal functions or biochemical parameters. Osteoclasts hyperactivity in thalassemia increases the serum receptor activator of nuclear factor Kappa B ligand (...
