Near-Infrared Emission Line Searches for High-Redshift Galaxies

چکیده

In this article I review recent developments in near-infrared emission line searches for star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Using the J-, H& K-bands we can potentially chart the history of star formation over the range 1 < z < 5 using the prominent rest-optical nebular emission lines alone, filling in the “redshift desert” at z ∼ 1 − 3 where most common emission lines lie outside the optical bands. Studying the rest-frame optical at z ∼ 2 also allows a fair comparison to be made with the local Universe – the rest-optical lines are vastly more robust to extinction by dust than the rest-UV, with the resonantly-scattered Lyα line particularly unreliable. I discuss the recent history of near-infrared emission-line searches using narrow-band imaging and spectroscopy, and look to the future in this era of 10m telescopes: such work gives us the potential to push to z > 10, the next frontier in the Hy-Redshift Universe.

EMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM SURVEY

A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP. Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission li...

On near - infrared H α searches for high - redshift galaxies ⋆

The lack of success of Lyα searches for high-redshift z > 2 field galaxies may be due to extinction by dust, suggesting that surveys based on lines of longer wavelength, particularly Hα, may be more effective. To test the dust hypothesis we have undertaken deep broad(K ) and narrow-band (5000 km s, λ = 2.177 μm) imaging of the field towards the quasar PHL957, in an attempt to detect Hα emission...

Discovery of a Galaxy Responsible for a DLA System at z = 3.15 and a Near-Infrared Search for Primeval Galaxies

We report the detection, both in line and continuum emission, of a galaxy responsible for a damped Lyα absorption (DLA) system at z = 3.15 projected 2.3 from QSO 2233+131. The star formation rate implied by both the Lyα and restframe far-UV continuum is ∼ 7 M⊙ yr . The galaxy also shows no sign of an active nucleus and has blue colors, both consistent with it being observed early in its star fo...

A Narrowband Imaging Survey for High Redshift Galaxies in the near Infrared

A narrowband imaging survey of 276 square minutes of arc was carried out at near infrared wavelengths to search for emission line objects at high redshifts. Most of the fields contained a known quasar or radio galaxy at a redshift that placed one of the strong, restframe optical emission lines (Hα, [O III], Hβ, or [O II]) in the bandpass of the narrowband filter. The area weighted line flux lim...

The Z = 2.51 Extremely Red Submillimeter Galaxy Smm J04431+0210

We report the redshift measurement for the submillimeter selected galaxy SMMJ04431+0210 (N4) using the Near Infrared Spectrograph on the Keck II telescope. The data show Hα, [NII] 6583,6548, and [OIII] 5007 lines at a redshift of z = 2.51. The high nuclear [NII]/Hα line ratio is consistent with a LINER or Type-II AGN. The Hα emission is spatially resolved, suggesting the presence of significant...
