P - values : Democrats or Dictators ?

چکیده
Part of being a good analyst and statistician is being able to understand the output of a statistical test in SAS ® . Pvalues are ubiquitous in statistical output as well as medical literature and can be the deciding factor in whether a paper gets published. This shows a somewhat dictatorial side of them. But do we really know what they mean? In a democratic process, people vote for another person to represent them, their values, and their opinions. In this sense, the sample of research subjects, their characteristics, and their experience, are combined and “represented” to a certain degree by the p-value. This paper discusses misconceptions about and misinterpretations of the p-value, as well as how things can go awry in calculating a p-value. Alternatives to p-values are described, with advantages and disadvantages of each. Finally, some thoughts about p-value interpretation are given. To “disarm” the dictator, we need to understand what the democratic p-value can tell us about what it represents....and what it doesn't. This presentation is aimed at beginning to intermediate SAS statisticians and analysts working with SAS/STAT ® .

Personal values and moral motivation 1 Personal values and moral motivation : disentangling moral integrity and moral hypocrisy
Positioning moral motivations within the framework provided by Schwartz’ (1992) values theory, we ran three dictator game studies (total N = 256) investigating moral integrity and moral hypocrisy. We adapted Batson’s (et al., 1997; et al., 1999; et al., 2002) landmark research design into the experimental economics laboratory (Study 1), and showed that the behavioral inconsistency – out of 64 d...

The results indicate that generosity is indeed driven by gu...

Analyzing the area ...
متن کاملChill-inducing music enhances altruism in humans
Music is a universal feature of human cultures, and it has both fascinated and troubled many researchers. In this paper we show through the dictator game (DG) that an individual's listening to preferred "chill-inducing" music may promote altruistic behavior that extends beyond the bounds of kin selection or reciprocal altruism. Participants were 22 undergraduate and postgraduate students who we...
