چکیده

The knowledge of visibility information on a terrain is essential for a large number of current applications. There exist several algorithms in the literature for building visibility maps (VMs) but only for one single viewpoint or at most for a very small number of observers. This limitation is due to the high computational complexity of the used methods (which is greater than O(N2), where N is the number of the terrain points) and also due to the fact that single-point algorithms cannot efficiently be scaled to all points. We present a novel fast algorithm able to compute the complete VM, also called total viewshed, where, given a terrain T represented by its regular digital elevation model (DEM), our method simultaneously produces a continuous VM for all the points of T. In particular, the proposed algorithm combines two algorithms, (i) a visible heights algorithm that divides the terrain into sectors and calculates the end of all the visible ring sectors and (ii) an algorithm that finds out the start of those visible ring sectors using a low-cost calculation. Theoretical and experimental comparisons were performed considering the VM of one single observer, because the most used GIS tools compute the viewshed by point. The results demonstrate that our algorithm is faster by many orders of magnitude than the widely used GIS visibility tools showing similar accuracy.

Efficient viewshed computation on terrain in external memory

The recent availability of detailed geographic data permits terrain applications to process large areas at high resolution. However the required massive data processing presents significant challenges, demanding algorithms optimized for both data movement and computation. One such application is viewshed computation, that is, to determine all the points visible from a given point p. In this pap...

A parallel computing approach to viewshed analysis of large terrain data using graphics processing units

Viewshed analysis, often supported by Geographic Information Systems (GIS), is widely used in many application domains. However, as terrain data continue to become increasingly large and available at high resolutions, data-intensive viewshed analysis poses significant computational challenges. General-Purpose computation on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) provides a promising means to address...

Siting Multiple Observers for Maximum Coverage: An Accurate Approach

The selection of the minimal number of observers that ensures the maximum visual coverage over an area represented by a digital elevation model (DEM) have great interest in many fields, e.g., telecommunications, environment planning, among others. However, this problem is complex and intractable when the number of points of the DEM is relatively high. This complexity is due to three issues: 1) ...

A Fast Algorithm for Approximate Viewshed Computation

Given a terrain model, the viewshed from a viewpoint is computed as the set of X-Y positions of a point target such that the target is visible. We introduce a novel approach to the computation of accurate viewshed approximations. Our algorithm relies on the computation of an approximation to the so-called line-of-sight (LOS) function. This function is defined over target X-Y positions, and is t...

Calculating the inherent visual structure of a landscape (‘total viewshed’) using high- throughput computing

This paper describes a method of calculating the inherent visibility at all locations in a landscape (‘total viewshed’) by making use of redundant computer cycles. This approach uses a simplified viewshed program that is suitable for use within a distributed environment, in this case managed by the Condor system. Distributing the calculation in this way reduced the calculation time of our examp...
