Intergalactic dust and its photoelectric heating

چکیده
We have examined the dust photoelectric heating in the intergalactic medium (IGM). The heating rate in a typical radiation field of the IGM is represented by Γpe = 1.2 × 10 erg s cm (D/10) (nH/10 cm) (JL/10 −21 erg s cm Hz sr) (T/10 K), where D is the dust-to-gas mass ratio, nH is the hydrogen number density, JL is the mean intensity at the hydrogen Lyman limit of the background radiation, and T is the gas temperature, if we assume the new X-ray photoelectric yield model by Weingartner et al. (2006) and the dust size distribution in the Milky Way by Mathis, Rumpl, & Nordsieck (1977). This heating rate dominates the HI and HeII photoionization heating rates when the hydrogen number density is less than ∼ 10 cm if D = 10 which is 1% of that in the Milky Way, although the heating rate is a factor of 2–4 smaller than that with the old yield model by Weingartner & Draine (2001). The grain size distribution is very important. If only large (≥ 0.1 μm) grains exist in the IGM, the heating rate is reduced by a factor of ≃ 5. Since the dust heating is more efficient in a lower density medium relative to the photoionization heating, it may cause an inverted temperature–density relation in the low density IGM suggested by Bolton et al. (2008). Finally, we have found that the dust heating is not very important in the mean IGM before the cosmic reionization. Constraint on intergalactic dust from thermal history of intergalactic medium
We present a new constraint on the amount of dust in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at high redshift. We derive the thermal history of the IGM by taking account of the photoelectric heating by dust grains, and compare it with the thermal history suggested by observations of Lyman α forests. As a result, if the IGM grain size is & 100 Å, the dust-gas mass ratio of the IGM at z & 2 is . 1/100 Gal...
متن کاملAmount of intergalactic dust: constraints from distant supernovae and thermal history of intergalactic medium
This paper examines the allowed amount of IG (intergalactic) dust, which is constrained by extinction and reddening of distant SNe and thermal history of IGM (intergalactic medium) affected by dust photoelectric heating. Based on the observational cosmic star formation history, we find an upper bound of χ, the mass ratio of the IG dust to the total metal in the Universe, as χ . 0.1 for 10Å . a ...
متن کاملOn the Importance of Local Sources of Radiation in Cosmological Absorption Systems
An upper limit to the importance of local sources of radiation compared to the cosmic background in cosmological absorption systems is derived, as a simple consequence of the conservation of surface brightness. The limit depends only on the rate of incidence of the absorbers and the mean free path of the radiation. It is found that, on average, the ionizing radiation intensity from local source...
متن کاملA spatially resolved study of photoelectric heating and [Cii] cooling in the LMC
Context. Photoelectric heating is a dominant heating mechanism for many phases of the interstellar medium. We study this mechanism throughout the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Aims. We aim to quantify the importance of the [C ii] cooling line and the photoelectric heating process of various environments in the LMC and to investigate which parameters control the extent of photoelectric heating. ...
متن کاملPhotoelectric heating and [CII] cooling in translucent clouds: results for cloud models based on simulations of compressible MHD turbulence
Far–ultraviolet (FUV) photons expel electrons from interstellar dust grains and the excess kinetic energy of the electrons is converted into gas thermal energy through collisions. This photoelectric heating is believed to be the main heating mechanism in cool HI clouds. The heating rate cannot be directly measured, but it can be estimated through observations of the [CII] line emission, since t...
