چکیده

We report the detection of optical and ultraviolet emission from the kiloparsec scale jet of the well-known quasar 3C 279. A bright knot, discovered in archival V and U band Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Camera images, is coincident with a peak in the radio jet ∼0.6 from the nucleus. The detection was also confirmed in Wide Field Planetary Camera-2 images. Archival Very Large Array and MERLIN radio data are also analyzed which help to show that the high-energy optical/UV continuum, and spectrum, are consistent with a synchrotron origin from the same population of relativistic electrons responsible for the radio emission. synchrotron emission from the oblique shock in the jet of the powerful radio galaxy 3 C 346

We report the first detection, with Chandra, of X-ray emission from the jet of the powerful narrow-line radio galaxy 3C 346. X-rays are detected from the bright radio and optical knot at which the jet apparently bends by about 70 degrees. The Chandra observation also reveals a bright galaxy-scale atmosphere within the previously-known cluster, and provides a good X-ray spectrum for the bright c...

Chandra observations of the X - ray jet in 3 C 66 B

Our Chandra observation of the FRI radio galaxy 3C 66B has resulted in the first detection of an X-ray counterpart to the previously known radio, infra-red and optical jet. The X-ray jet is detected up to 7 arcsec from the core and has a steep X-ray spectrum, α ≈ 1.3 ± 0.1. The overall X-ray flux density and spectrum of the jet are consistent with a synchrotron origin for the X-ray emission. Ho...

Discovery of Optical Emission in the Hotspots of Three 3cr Quasars: High-energy Particle Acceleration in Powerful Radio Hotspots

Archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images were used to search for optical emission associated with the radio jets of a number of luminous quasars. From this search, we report new optical hotspot detections in the wellknown blazar 3C 454.3 and the lobe-dominated quasars 3C 275.1 and 3C 336. We also find optical emission in the vicinity of the hotspot in 3C 208, but believe this is a chance al...

A high - resolution multi - wavelength study of the jet in 3 C 273

We present HST images at 622 nm and 300 nm of the jet in 3C 273 and determine the run of the optical spectral index at 0. 2 along the jet. We find no evidence for localized acceleration or loss sites, and support for a little-changing spectral shape throughout the jet. We consider this further evidence in favour of a distributed acceleration process. Of the plethora of known extragalactic radio...

X - rays from the jet in 3 C 273 : clues from the radio – optical spectra

Using new deep VLA and HST observations of the large-scale jet in 3C 273 matched to 0. ′′ 3 resolution, we have detected excess near-ultraviolet emission (λ 300 nm) above a synchrotron cutoff spectrum accounting for the emission from radio through optical (λλ3.6 cm–620 nm). This necessitates a two-component model for the emission. The radio–optical–X-ray spectral energy distributions suggest a ...
