چکیده

Tungsten will be an important element in nearly all future fusion reactors because of its presence in plasma facing components. This makes tungsten a good candidate for a diagnostic element for ion temperature and toroidal velocity measurement, and it makes understanding tungsten emissions important for tokamak power balance. The effect of tungsten on tokamak plasmas is investigated at the Alcator C-Mod tokamak using VUV, bolometry, and soft X-ray spectroscopy. Tungsten was present in Alcator C-Mod as a plasma facing component and through laser blow off impurity injection. Quasi-continuum emission previously seen at other tokamaks has been identified. Theoretical predictions are presented of tungsten emission that could be expected in future Alcator C-Mod measurements. Furthermore, spectra of highly charged tungsten ions have been studied at the Su-perEBIT electron beam ion trap. This emission could prove useful for spectroscopic diagnostics of future high-temperature fusion reactor plasmas.

Comparison of tungsten nano-tendrils grown in Alcator C- Mod and linear plasma devices

Growth of tungsten nano-tendrils (“fuzz”) has been observed for the first time in the divertor region of a high-power density tokamak experiment. After 14 consecutive helium L-mode discharges in Alcator C-Mod, the tip of a tungsten Langmuir probe at the outer strike point was fully covered with a layer of nano-tendrils. The depth of the W fuzz layer (600 ± 150 nm) is consistent with an empirica...

Deterministic Chaos in Alcator C - Mod Edge

Understanding the underlying dynamics of turbulence in magnetic confinement fusion experiments is extremely important. Turbulence greatly reduces the confinement time of these devices and therefore greater knowledge of turbulent dynamics can help with its mitigation. Experiments from the Alcator C-Mod tokamak [18] provide support for a theory that edge turbulence in tokamak fusion plasmas is th...

Influence of boronization on operation with high-Z plasma facing components in Alcator C-Mod

We report the results of operation of Alcator C-Mod with all high-Z molybdenum Plasma Facing Component (PFC) surfaces. Without boron-coated PFCs energy confinement was poor (HITER,89 ~ 1) due to high core molybdenum (nMo/ne 0.1%) and radiation. After applying boron coatings, nMo/ne was reduced by a factor of 10-20 with HITER,89 approaching 2. Results of between-discharge boronization, localized...

Wall-Actuated Scanning Probe(WASP) For High-Field Side Plasma Measurements On Alcator C-Mod

A new, high-field side scanning probe has been added to Alcator C-Mod's complement of edge diagnostics. The WASP is designed to provide all the benefits of a linear plunge, multi-electrode scanning probe while working from the confined space of the inner tokamak wall. The drive mechanism is an embedded coil which produces a torque with the ambient toroidal magnetic field when energized, thus al...

A study of tungsten migration in the Alcator C-Mod divertor

A toroidally-continuous row of bulk tungsten (W) tiles was installed near the typical location of the outer strike–point in the Alcator C-Mod divertor and was removed for analysis after two campaigns (3151 plasma discharges). External beam (in–air) particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis has been used to observe campaign–integrated Wmigration patterns in the otherwise Mo divertor using ...
