Character Networks for Narrative Generation: Structural Balance Theory and the Emergence of Proto-Narratives
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper models narrative as a complex adaptive system in which the temporal sequence of events constituting a story emerges out of cascading local interactions between nodes in a social network. The approach is not intended as a general theory of narrative, but rather as a particular generative mechanism relevant to several academic communities: (1) literary critics and narrative theorists interested in new models for narrative analysis, (2) artificial intelligence researchers and video game designers interested in new mechanisms for narrative generation, and (3) complex systems theorists interested in novel applications of agent-based modeling and network theory. The paper is divided into two parts. The first part offers examples of research by literary critics on the relationship between social networks of fictional characters and the structure of longform narratives, particularly novels. The second part provides an example of schematic story generation based on a simulation of the structural balance network model. I will argue that if literary critics can better understand sophisticated narratives by extracting networks from them, then narrative intelligence researchers can benefit by inverting the process, that is, by generating narratives from networks. 1998 ACM Subject Classification J.5 Arts and Humanities, I.6.8 Types of Simulation

Incorporating Global and Local Knowledge in Intentional Narrative Planning
The inclusion of independent, imperfect knowledge that represents virtual agents’ belief of the local state of a narrative planning world has become a key component of narrative generation through simulation of multiple characters. However such models of belief incur significant computational cost. This paper demonstrates that despite the computational complexity, narratives can be generated no...
متن کاملCharacter Networks for Narrative Generation
In this position paper, the author proposes the use of social networks of characters as an AI narrative generation mechanism. The first part of the paper offers examples of recent research by literary critics on the relationship between character networks and narrative structure. The second part of the paper offers a simple example of story generation based on a structural balance network model...
متن کاملComparison of Point of View based on Gérard Genette’s Focalization theory in Sophocles’ Ajax and Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury
Sophocles’ Ajax is among the most significant plays in ancient Greek literature, and William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury is an important modern novel. This study considers these two works using Gérard Genette’s Focalization term in Narratology theory. Focalization is a feature of the point of view in narrative and is described by characters’ action, emotional reaction and speech. This stu...

The ability to generate narrative can be applied to entertainment and educational applications to the benefit of both. In this paper, I informally evaluate several narrative generation systems. Automated narrative generation systems can be classified as character-centric and author-centric techniques. Character-centric systems tend to develop narratives with strong character believability but w...
متن کاملRhetorical Structure Analysis of EFLs’ Written Narratives of a Picture Story
This study was set to reveal how second language learners use rhetorical relations in their written narratives in terms of Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) primarily proposed by Mann & Thompson (1987) and developed by Mann, Matthiessen & Thompson (1992). To this end, sixty written narratives based on the picture story book ‘Frog, where are you?’ were collected from EFL learners and were put to...
