Semantics and Pragmatics of Argument Alternations
نویسنده
چکیده
After setting out the challenges posed by argument alternations for linguistic theory, this paper reviews the development of accounts of argument alternations over the last fifty years, documenting a shift from accounts that are primarily syntactic in nature to accounts with semantic and pragmatic components. The remainder of the paper consists of case studies of the developing understanding of the semantics and pragmatics of the dative alternation and the causative alternation. Each case study stresses the interplay of semantic and contextual factors in characterizing the relation between the two variants that make up the alternation and in the determination of the choice of variant in a given context.

Recanati on the Semantics/pragmatics Distinction
One of the hottest philosophical debates in recent years concerns the nature of the semantics/pragmatics divide. Some writers have expressed the reserve that this might be merely terminological, but in my view it ultimately concerns a substantive issue with empirical implications: the scope and limits of a serious scientific undertaking, formal semantics. In this critical note I discuss two arg...
متن کاملFigurative language and the semantics-pragmatics distinction
This paper aims at demonstrating that the cognitive mechanisms underlying certain tropes (e.g. metaphor or metonymy) may assume variable degrees of conventionalisation, thereby giving rise to a range of phenomena along either side of the semantics/ pragmatics distinction. Examining specifically cases of metonymy, I propose a pragmatic account of creative, one-off metonymic expressions using the...
متن کاملA Pragmatic and Semantic Unified Framework for Agent Communication
In this thesis, we propose a unified framework for the pragmatics and the semantics of agent communication. Pragmatics deals with the way agents use communicative acts when conversing. It is related to the dynamics of agent interactions and to the way of connecting individual acts while building complete conversations. Semantics is interested in the meaning of these acts. It lays down the found...
متن کاملEvents and verb classification*
The prevailing approach to understanding the syntactic mapping of arguments and argument alternations is to assume that verbs are organized into semantically distinct verb classes and that class membership determines the grammaticality of argument alternations. This paper presents syntactic evidence that verb-class membership cannot explain the causative and locative alternations, and that alte...
متن کاملAssessing Pragmatics through MDCTs: A Case of Iranian EFL Learners
Testing pragmatic competence has always posed daunting challenges to researchers and practitioners. As a step to address the gap in pragmatic testing, this paper delineates the procedural stages of developing and validating a context-sensitive Multiple Choice Discourse Completion Test (MDCT). Following a unitary view of validity, tenable argument and empirical evidence was accumulated to suppor...
