چکیده

Results 158 patients were considered to have FED and had MVR in our institution from 2005 to 2014. Mean follow-up was 1468 days. Mean age was 65,8 years. Preoperative functional status (FS) was NYHA III-IV in 61 patients (38,6%). There were 4 in-hospital deaths (4/158) none of them in the operating room (OR) 6 out of 158 left the OR with >2+ mitral insufficiency (MI). At discharge there were 15 deaths. Actuarial survival was 89,6% (13 deaths/154) Freedom from >2+ MI was 92,8% (129/139) with 6 patients being reoperated during follow-up (4 underwent MV replacement and 2 cardiac transplantation). Freedom from FS >III+ was 132/139. No endocarditis were observed during follow-up. Discussion/Conclusion Long-term results for FED mitral valve repair seem to be excellent being apparently the primary option for these patients. Endocarditis and thromboembolic events appear to be almost forgotten in this setting.

Etiologic classification of degenerative mitral valve disease: Barlow's disease and fibroelastic deficiency.

Barlow's disease and fibroelastic deficiency are the two dominant forms of degenerative mitral valve disease and have unique differentiating characteristics on clinical and echocardiographic assessment. Preoperative differentiation of patients by both cardiologists and surgeons is important because the techniques, surgical skill, and expertise required to achieve a repair vary among these etiol...

The cardiologist's role in increasing the rate of mitral valve repair in degenerative disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW To highlight the relevance of preoperative differentiation of degenerative mitral valve disease based on etiology (predominantly Barlow's Disease or fibroelastic deficiency) and severity of lesions with an emphasis on how such differentiation by the cardiologist can result in increased rate of mitral valve repair. RECENT FINDINGS In the hands of reference mitral valve-repair...

Seeking a higher standard for degenerative mitral valve repair: begin with etiology.

doi:10.1016/j.jtcvs.2007.10.060 D espite the widely held consensus that valve repair is the preferred surgical treatment for patients suffering from degenerative mitral valve disease, valve replacement for this condition remains all too prevalent. In the past few years interest in mitral valve repair has expanded among cardiologists and surgeons, with the recognition that asymptomatic patients ...

Prolapse Volume to Prolapse Height Ratio for Differentiating Barlow's Disease From Fibroelastic Deficiency.

BACKGROUND As mitral valve (MV) repair for Barlow's disease remains surgically challenging, it is important to distinguish Barlow's disease from fibroelastic deficiency (FED) preoperatively. We hypothesized that the prolapse volume to prolapse height ratio (PV-PH ratio) may be useful to differentiate Barlow's disease and FED.Methods and Results:In 76 patients with MV prolapse who underwent pres...

Clinical and pathological features of degenerative mitral valve disease: billowing mitral leaflet versus fibroelastic deficiency.

PURPOSE Degenerative mitral valve disease is distinguished with billowing mitral leaflet (BML) or fibroelastic deficiency (FED). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical characteristics and the pathohistological differences between BML and FED. METHODS A total of 73 patients who diagnosed as degenerative mitral valve disease pathologically after mitral valve surgery for severe mi...
