چکیده

tributors to the decline in the number of cases of acute diarrhea in children after the tsunami. Although out-migration of island residents or a reduction in case detection after the tsunami also could have contributed to the observed decline in cases of diarrhea, no largescale migration was reported during the period, and disease surveillance systems were in fact strengthened after the tsunami and further strengthened with the introduction of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program. In summary, we found that the incidence of acute diarrhea among children of the Andaman Islands decreased within months after the 2004 tsunami. This result highlights the importance of public health and sanitation measures after a natural disaster.

Population-Attributable Risk Estimates for Risk Factors Associated with Campylobacter Infection, Australia

In 2001-2002, a multicenter, prospective case-control study involving 1,714 participants > or =5 years of age was conducted in Australia to identify risk factors for Campylobacter infection. Adjusted population-attributable risks (PARs) were derived for each independent risk factor contained within the final multivariable logistic regression model. Estimated PARs were combined with adjusted (fo...

A multi-centre prospective case-control study of campylobacter infection in persons aged 5 years and older in Australia.

There are an estimated 277,000 cases of campylobacteriosis in Australia each year, most of which are thought to be sporadically acquired. To explore causes for these infections, we conducted a multi-centre case-control study of patients and community controls across five Australian States during 2001-2002. A total of 881 campylobacter cases and 833 controls aged 5 years were recruited into the ...

Risk factors for sporadic Campylobacter infection in the United States: A case-control study in FoodNet sites.

Campylobacter is a common cause of gastroenteritis in the United States. We conducted a population-based case-control study to determine risk factors for sporadic Campylobacter infection. During a 12-month study, we enrolled 1316 patients with culture-confirmed Campylobacter infections from 7 states, collecting demographic, clinical, and exposure data using a standardized questionnaire. We inte...

Quantifying the Association between Campylobacter Infection and Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Systematic Review

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a neurologic disease that causes ascending paralysis and is triggered by a preceding bacterial or viral infection. Several studies have shown that patients with GBS have a recent history of infection due to Campylobacter jejuni. A literature review of published studies that reported rates of Campylobacter infection before or in conjunction with GBS was done. The...

Guillain-Barré Syndrome and Preceding Infection with Campylobacter, Influenza and Epstein-Barr Virus in the General Practice Research Database

BACKGROUND A number of infectious agents have previously been suggested as risk factors for the development of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), but robust epidemiologic evidence for these associations is lacking. METHODS AND FINDINGS We conducted a nested case-control study using data from the United Kingdom General Practice Research Database between 1991 and 2001. Controls were matched to case...
