Sleep Pattern of Japanese Infants and Their Mother’s Parenting Stress

چکیده
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep of healthy infants and their mother’s parenting stress in Japan. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Data obtained from 48 healthy mothers and their infants aged from 6-month old to 24-month old were studied. The mothers completed questionnaires including the Parenting Stress Index Short Form (PSI Short Form), and infant’s sleep measures were assessed by an actigraph (Micro-mini RC, Ambulatory Monitoring Inc., Ardsley, NY). Results: All infants, except one, shared a room with their mothers for sleeping. Of these infants, 22 infants shared a bed with their mothers. Sleep measures including sleep quality showed developmental change along with their age. However, the score of maternal parenting stress did not change. Maternal parenting stress is significantly differed by the mother’s perception of infant’s sleep. Conclusion: Room-share is common lifestyle among Japanese mothers raising infants and sleep development of infants was confirmed. Thus, the health care providers could give information that bed-share and room-share does not affect infant’s sleep development during early stage of infancy in Japan. Maternal subjective perception of infant’s sleep is associated with parenting stress rather than sleep assessments by objective methods. *Corresponding author: Yoko Asaka, Associate Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences, Hokkaido University N12-W5, Kitaku, Sapporo 060-0812, Japan, Tel: +81-11-706-2832; E-mail: [email protected] Received September 23, 2013; Accepted November 05, 2013; Published November 09, 2013 Citation: Asaka Y (2013) Sleep Pattern of Japanese Infants and Their Mother’s Parenting Stress. متن کاملUnderstanding How Motherhood and Poverty Change the Brain
Poverty-associated chronic stress is a serious threat not only to a mother’s mental health but also to maternal functioning. Recent neuroimaging studies suggest that a mother’s brain undergoes dynamic changes to support her transition to parenthood, including better emotion regulation and heightened sensitivity to infants. However, we propose that the chronic stress experienced by low-income mo...
متن کاملParenting stress mediates between maternal maltreatment history and maternal sensitivity in a community sample.
OBJECTIVE Maternal maltreatment history and current parenting stress are associated with parenting difficulties. However, researchers have not investigated the mechanism by which these variables are interlinked. We hypothesized that parenting stress mediates the relation between history of maltreatment and parenting behavior. METHODS We assessed a community sample of 291 mothers as they inter...

Transactional models of parenting and infant sleep call attention to bidirectional associations among parenting, the biosocial environment, and infant sleep behaviors. Although night waking and bedtime fussing are normative during infancy and early childhood, they can be challenging for parents. The current study, conducted in the United States between 2003 and 2009, examined concurrent and lon...
