M ar 1 99 9 The Interstellar Environment of Filled - Center Supernova Remnants III : The Crab Nebula
نویسندگان
چکیده
The H I environment of the Crab Nebula is investigated using 2.75 ′ and 9 ′ resolution data from (respectively) the DRAO Synthesis, and Effelsberg 100 m, radio telescopes. No clear evidence for an interaction between the Crab and the surrounding H I is found; the Crab probably lies within the boundaries of a large scale, low-density void in the H I distribution. The presence of a wind-blown H I bubble near the Crab is confirmed, and it is suggested that the unidentified star which powers this bubble is responsible for the stellar wind material detected along the line of sight towards the Crab.

The kinematic and morphological properties of a string of [Ar III] bright knots in the Crab Nebula are examined using 1994 – 1999 HST WFPC-2 images of the remnant. We find that five southern [Ar III] bright knots exhibit ordinary radial motions away from the nebula’s center of expansion with magnitudes consistent with their projected radial displacements. This result does not support the sugges...
متن کاملNeutron Stars in Supernova Remnants
In the following, we shall briefly summarize some facts and ideas concerning the presence of neutron stars in Supernova remnants. While sources similar to the Crab Nebula require the presence of a central energetic object, shell-type remnants such as Cas A are compatible with the presence of neutron stars releasing a weak relativistic wind. Supernova remnants are usually classified into two ext...

Due to observations made by the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory over the last six years, it appears that a number of galactic supernova remnants may be candidates for sources of cosmic gamma-rays. These include shell-type remnants such as IC443 and γ Cygni, which have no known parent pulsars, but have significant associations with unidentified EGRET sources, and others that appear to be composite...

متن کاملThe Radio Spectral Index of the Crab Nebula
We present the results of a new, comprehensive investigation of the radio spectral index of the Crab Nebula supernova remnant. New data at 74 MHz are combined with data at 327 MHz, 1.5 GHz and 5 GHz. In contrast to previous claims, little spatial variation in the spectral index is seen. In particular, between 327 MHz and 5 GHz we see no evidence of spectral steepening near the edge of the nebul...
