Observation of beam-induced changes in the polarization of Balmer- alpha radiation emitted following beam-tilted-foil transmission.

چکیده
Measurements of the circular polarization of Balmer-u radiation emitted by excited hydrogen atoms, following the transmission of (20—50)-keV protons through thin, tilted amorphous carbon foils, exhibit markedly unexpected behavior as a function of exposure of the foil to the proton beam. Specifically, the circular polarization changes from an initially well understood tilt-angle dependence to a behavior which, for low tilt angles, gives the opposite handedness of circular polarization from that predicted. In addition, the degree of alignment, indicated by the linear Stokes parameter MII, is enhanced also as a function of dose. These changes in the tilt-angle dependence of the Stokes parameters have been systematically correlated with beam-induced graphitization of the foil, which is observed to occur from Raman measurements.

The tilted foil polarization technique has been applied to a beam of radioactive Mg (I = 3=2; T1=2 = 11:35s) ions from ISOLDE. To achieve su cient energy for penetration of the foils a high voltage platform has been constructed and used for acceleration of the initial 120 keV beam of 2 Mg ions to 480 keV. The resulting asymmetry of the emitted -radiation from the Mg implanted into a cold Pt sto...
متن کاملA Measurement of High Gain Sase Fel Induced Electron Beam Micro-bunching Using Coherent Transition Radiation
Coherent transition radiation (CTR) was used to study the longitudinal modulations of an electron beam exiting the UCLA/LANL high gain SASE FEL. The induced longitudinal micro-bunching of the electron beam at the exit of the undulator was measured with a frequency domain technique using the CTR emitted when this beam strikes a thin conducting foil. Formalisms for both CTR and SASE theories are ...
متن کاملABCD matrix for reflection and refraction of laser beam at tilted concave and convex elliptic paraboloid interfaces and studying laser beam reflection from a tilted concave parabola of revolution
Studying Gaussian beam is a method to investigate laser beam propagation and ABCD matrix is a fast and simple method to simulate Gaussian beam propagation in different mediums. Of the ABCD matrices studied so far, reflection and refraction matrices at various surfaces have attracted a lot of researches. However in previous work the incident beam and the principle axis of surface are in parallel...

Objective(s): Radiation therapy for breast cancer can induce myocardial capillary injury and increase cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. A prospective cohort was conducted to study the prevalence of myocardial perfusion abnormalities following radiation therapy of left-sided breast cancer patients as compared to those with right–sided cancer. Methods: To minimize potential confounding fact...

Background: The in vivo radiation-induced bystander effects (RIBE) at the developmental, genetic, and epigenetic levels have been well demonstrated using model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana). However, the mechanisms underlying RIBE in plants are not clear, especially lacking a comprehensive knowledge about the genes and biological pathways involved in the RIBE in plants. Materials and...
