The South Island Otter - a Reassessment 129

چکیده

The waitoreke, or supposed South Island otter, has remained a mystery for over a century; for, despite the authoritative evidence of Haast' (1877, 1879), some highly circumstantial early Maori accounts and numerous well-documented' and impressive claims of later sightings by' amateur naturalists, zoologists generally have been only too happy to dismiss the animal as a myth. An examination of much of the evidence was attempted by Wall (1926), but this was based on a very superlicial knowledge of the ecology of otters generally and, in any event, he was unashamedly arguing from a concJusion. A much more objective survey was made by Watson (1960), who was more guarded in his conclusions; but he. in turn, deliberately ignored all accounts later than about ]880 on the plea that they were probably based on sightings of various smaller introduced mammals. The present paper, besides recording some new material of more recent date, attempts a reassessment of the earHer evidence and suggests a theory which could account for the presence in New Zealand of a land mammal such as the waitoreke.

Assessment of clinical pathology and pathogen exposure in sea otters (Enhydra lutris) bordering the threatened population in Alaska.

Northern sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) abundance has decreased dramatically over portions of southwest Alaska, USA, since the mid-1980s, and this stock is currently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. In contrast, adjacent populations in south central Alaska, USA, and Russia have been stable to increasing during the same period. Sea otters bordering the area classified i...

Diversity of mtDNA in Southern River Otter (Lontra provocax) from Argentinean Patagonia.

Lontra provocax is an endemic species from Patagonia that has been categorized as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. In this study, noninvasive molecular methods were used to investigate the genetic diversity and haplotype distribution of L. provocax in Argentinean Patagonia. We analyzed 150 scat samples collected from 1995 to 2006 and obtained 13 sequences of c...

Selection of nesting habitat of hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) in two coral islands of Qeshm and Hengam in the Persian Gulf, Iran

The Persian Gulf islands are the nesting regions for the severely endangered hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) species. Therefore, the selection of the nesting habitat of this species in the two islands of Qeshm and Hengam was studied by a five-member working group in the spring of 2013 - 2015. Ultimately, 23 and 17 nests were identified in the south of Qeshm Island and in the south and...

A mitogenomic phylogeny and genetic history of Amphioctopus fangsiao (d’Orbigny 1839-1841) from China

Phylogeny and genetic diversity of Amphioctopus fangsiao were assessed by sequence analysis of complete mitochondrial genomes, sequenced from 15 individuals of nine populations. The whole mtDNA genomes size were ranging from 15977 to 15990 bp. Data revealed 1642 polymorphic sites and 1023 parsimony informative sites.  The phylogenetic analysis based on neighbor joining tree disclosed two clades...

Benthic Biotopes Remote Sensing Using Single Beam Acoustics on the South Coast of the Qeshm Island, the Persian Gulf

The study presents the result of a new attempt for benthic biotopes remote sensing in the southern coast of the Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf. This survey site covers approximately 233 km2 in water depth between five and 25 m. Bathymetric data was derived from the single beam survey and grab stations, underwater video and photos were undertaken as ground-trusthing. The acoustic results showe...
