چکیده

Current results in basic Information Extraction tasks such as Named Entity Recognition or Event Extraction suggest that we are close to achieving a stage where the fundamental units for text understanding are put together; namely, predicates and their arguments. However, other layers of information, such as event modality, are essential for understanding, since the inferences derivable from factual events are obviously different from those judged as possible or non-existent. In this paper, we rst map out the scope of modality in natural language; we propose a specication language for annotating this information in text; and nally we describe two tools that automatically recognizing modal information in natural language text.

Annotating Event Mentions in Text with Modality, Focus, and Source Information

Many natural language processing tasks, including information extraction, question answering and recognizing textual entailment, require analysis of the polarity, focus of polarity, tense, aspect, mood and source of the event mentions in a text in addition to its predicateargument structure analysis. We refer to modality, polarity and other associated information as extended modality. In this p...

Overview of the QA4MRE Pilot Task: Annotating Modality and Negation for a Machine Reading Evaluation

This paper describes the pilot task Processing modality and negation, which was organized in the framework of the Question Answering for Machine Reading Evaluation Lab at CLEF 2012. This task was defined as an annotation exercise consisting on determining whether an event mentioned in a text is presented as negated, modalised (i.e. affected by an expression of modality), or both. Three teams pa...

Event Detection and Co-reference with Minimal Supervision

An important aspect of natural language understanding involves recognizing and categorizing events and the relations among them. However, these tasks are quite subtle and annotating training data for machine learning based approaches is an expensive task, resulting in supervised systems that attempt to learn complex models from small amounts of data, which they over-fit. This paper addresses th...

Exploring the Relationship Between Modality and Readability Across Different Text Types

With regard to the relationship between the use of modality and readability levels oftexts, 2 opposing views have been raised. The first view endorses direct positiverelationship between modality and readability in the sense that the use of modalityincreases textual understandability. The second view is that the use of modality leadsto an increase in the number of words, resulting in readabilit...

Introduction to Special Issue on Advances in Question Answering

This special issue on advanced topics in question answering is devoted to two critically important areas of annotation and reasoning in support of this task: recognizing opinions, speculations, and emotions in text; and identifying temporally sensitive expressions in text. This issue contains four articles addressing “these” two problems: Annotating Expressions of Opinions and Emotions in Langu...
