Effect of Fiber Length on Processing and Properties of Extruded Wood-Fiber/HDPE Composites

چکیده
Fiber length and distribution play important roles in the processing and mechanical performance of fiber-based products such as paper and fiberboard. In the case of wood–plastic composites (WPC), the production of WPC with long fibers has been neglected, because they are difficult to handle with current production equipment. This study provides a better understanding of the effect of fiber length on WPC processing and properties. The objectives of this study were therefore to determine the role of fiber length in the formation process and property development of WPC. Three chemithermomechanical pulps (CTMP) with different lengths, distributions, and length-to-diameter ratios (L/D) were obtained by mechanical refining. Length, shape, and distribution were characterized using a fiber quality analyzer (FQA). The rheometer torque properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) filled with the pulps at different loads were studied. Variations in fiber load and length distribution resulted in significant variations in melting properties and torque characteristics. Composites from the three length distributions were successfully processed using extrusion. Physical and mechanical properties of the obtained composites varied with both length distribution and additive type. Mechanical properties increased with increasing fiber length, whereas performance in water immersion tests decreased. VC 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 110:

Effect of Hybrid Talc-Basalt Fillers in the Shell Layer on Thermal and Mechanical Performance of Co-Extruded Wood Plastic Composites
Hybrid basalt fiber (BF) and Talc filled high density polyethylene (HDPE) and co-extruded wood-plastic composites (WPCs) with different BF/Talc/HDPE composition levels in the shell were prepared and their mechanical, morphological and thermal properties were characterized. Incorporating BFs into the HDPE-Talc composite substantially enhanced the thermal expansion property, flexural, tensile and...
متن کاملEffects of Wood Fiber Content on the Rheological Properties, Crystallization Behavior, and Cell Morphology of Extruded Wood Fiber/hdpe Composites Foams
When increasing the wood fiber (WF) content in extruded wood fiber/plastic composites (WPC) foams, a good balance between reducing the cost and obtaining good cell morphology should be maintained. This study examines the relationship between WF content and the foam morphology in WPC foams. The role of WF as cell nucleating agent at low concentrations (10 wt.%) was observed, as WPC foam with 10 ...

In this study, effect of MAPE (maleic anhydride polyethylene) as the compatibilizer on the mechanical properties of wood-flour polyethylene composites has been investigated by using Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). Composites were made at 25% and 50% by weight fiber contents and 1% and 2% compatibilizer respectively. Controls were also made at the same fiber contents without the compatibilize...
