The rise/fall/connection model of intonation
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes a new model of intonation for English. The paper proposes that intonation can be described using a sequence of rise, fall and connection elements. Pitch accents and boundary rises are described using rise and fall elements, and connection elements are used to describe everything else. Equations can be used to synthesize fundamental frequency (F ) contours from these elements. An automatic labelling system is described which can derive a rise/fall/connection description from any utterance without using prior knowledge or top-down processing. Synthesis and analysis experiments are described using utterances from six speakers of various English accents. An analysis/resynthesis experiment is described which shows that the contours produced by the model are similar to within 3.6 to 7.3 Hz of the originals. An assessment of the automatic labeller shows 72% to 92% agreement between automatic and hand labels. The paper concludes with a comparison between this model and others, and a discussion of the practical applications of the model.

Automatic recognition of intonation from F0 contours using the rise/fall/connection model
This paper describes an automatic system for labelling intonational tune information based on the Rise/Fall/Connection model of intonation. The system is powerful in that it presupposes no prosodic knowledge of the utterance it is recognizing, and is capable of labelling all the intonational tune eeects of English.
متن کاملSynthesizing Intonation using the RFC Model
This paper describes an implementation of the rise/fall/connection (RFC) model of intonation for use in the speech synthesis component of a machine interpretation system. The phonological input is described, as is the algorithm which converts this to a rise/fall/connection description, and eventually to an F contour. As we wish to model different speakers’ intonational characteristics, some det...
متن کاملKurdish Movements and Distributive Power Structures: A Theoretical Model to Understand the Rise and Fall of Kurdish Movements
Many studies have been conducted on the Kurds and their movements. Most authors have considered historical dimensions or applied limited theoretical variables, but have not been able to identify the variables to identify the key reasons behind the rise and fall of Kurdish movements in an explanatory theoretical model. Consequently, there is neither available data about their rise, continuity, a...
متن کاملRecognition of intonation patterns in Thai utterance
Thai intonation can be categorized as paralinguistic information of F0 contour of the utterance. There are three classes of intonation pattern in Thai, the Fall Class, the Rise Class, and the Convolution Class. This paper presents a method of intonation pattern recognition of Thai utterance. Two intonation feature contours, extracted from F0 contour, were proposed. The feature contours were con...
متن کاملPhrase-final rise-fall intonation and disfluency in Japanese - a preliminary study
In Japanese conversations, rise-fall intonation with vowel lengthening often occurs on the final syllable of a phrase. This phrase-final rise-fall (PFRF) is a new type of intonation first reported in the 1960’s. Researchers consider PFRF intonation a discourse marker which functions to sharpen the phrase boundary and retain the utterance turn, but other phrase-final intonation such as phrase-fi...
