Unresolving furunculosis in a diabetic patient: cutaneous Mycobacterium abscessus infection.

چکیده
Dear Editor, Mycobacterium abscessus is a ubiquitous rapidly growing mycobacterium which is widespread in soil, water and dust. It is known to cause cutaneous infections in the form of furuncles, nodules and ulcers. Infections typically develop following trauma such as injections, acupuncture, operations and other penetrating injuries.1 We describe a diabetic patient who developed multiple furuncles over her abdomen due to an infection with M. abscessus from which several learning points are highlighted.

The role of nontuberculous mycobacteria in cutaneous infections of diabetic patients: a literature review
Background: Diabetes is an important metabolic disease with myriad manifestations and complications, affecting many people. Cutaneous infections impact numerous diabetic patients. Among different bacterial infections in diabetic patients, the infections caused by mycobacteria other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MOTT) eventuate in complications owing to the paucity of accurate detection...
متن کاملIntractable Cutaneous Nontuberculous Mycobacteriosis (Mycobacterium abscessus) during Treatment for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Mycobacterium abscessus infection tends to occur in patients with an advanced immunocompromised status. We encountered a case of intractable cutaneous M. abscessus infection that developed in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) during maintenance therapy. A 28-year-old woman developed a fever and redness of the skin on her buttocks. General antibacterial therapy was ineffective, a...
متن کاملCutaneous Mycobacterium abscessus Infection Associated with Mesotherapy Injection
Non-tuberculous mycobacterial skin infections have an increasing incidence. In immunocompetent patients, they usually follow local trauma. We present a case of cutaneous Mycobacterium abscessus infection following mesotherapy. The lesions were successfully treated with a combination of clarithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and doxycycline. Atypical mycobacterial infection should be suspected in patien...

UNLABELLED INTRODUCTION Rapidly growing mycobacteria are opportunistic pathogens in patients with underlying risk factors. Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. bolletii is a newly recognized member of rapidly growing mycobacteria, isolated from respiratory tract and cutaneous infections. CASE PRESENTATION We describe a case of chronic disseminated infection caused by M. abscessus subsp. bolletii...
متن کاملTwo Episodes of Cutaneous Non-Tuberculous Mycobacterial Infection in a Patient with Psoriasis
Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are a group of environmental pathogens, which cause a broad spectrum of disease. The incidence of NTM infection is increasing, especially in immunocompromized patients. The past three decades also saw a rapid increase in the incidence of NTM infection involving otherwise healthy subjects. We report a case of cutaneous NTM infection in a 79-year-old Chinese wom...
