Folic acid nutrition of the minute streptococci.

چکیده
The minute streptococci comprise a unique group with respect to their physiological and serological characteristics, as well as their nutritional requirements. Serologically they constitute Lancefield's serological group F and type 1, group G. The type specific antigen that defines type 1 in both serological groups appears to be identical, thus resulting in cross reactions among these streptococci between the two serological groups. Preliminary nutritional studies on the minute streptococci (Niven, Washburn, and Sheran, 1946) revealed that all the minute streptococci could be cultured in a casein hydrolyzate medium supplemented with a vitamin mixture. All strains required nicotinic acid, riboflavin, biotin, pantothenic acid, and folic acid. Thiamin and pyridoxine stimulated growth. Contrary to results with other folic acid-requiring microorganisms, the pyrimidine (thymine) failed to replace the folic acid requirement of these streptococci. This study concerns additional studies on the minute streptococci with respect to their folic acid requirements.

1. The influence of trace-nutrient-binding proteins on the growth of coliforms, streptococci and lactobacilli in the gastrointestinal tract was examined in neonatal rabbits delivered germ-free and dosed with an artificial flora (ESL), or born conventionally and dosed with ESL or rabbit faeces. 2. In the stomach and small intestine of both gnotobiotic and conventional animals the counts of colif...

Background and Aims: The aim of this study was to synthesize antibody-conjugated radioactive(thorium oxide) nanoparticles (ACRNPs) and folic acid-conjugated radioactive nanoparticles (FACRNPs). Materials and Methods: After synthesis of nanoparticles, blood samples from CLL patients and normal subjects were obtained, and their mononuclear cells were isolated by Ficoll method. To evaluate cyto...

Background and Aim: Vitiligo is a hypopigmentation disorder of the skin that is associated with depression and an impaired quality of life. There has been conflicting reports on the association between the disease and the serum levels of homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folic acid.In this study, serum levels of homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folic acid were evaluated in patients with vitiligo.Meth...
متن کاملAssessment of Turkish women's knowledge concerning folic acid and prevention of birth defects.
OBJECTIVES In Turkey, the incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs) is 30.1 per 10,000 births. For this reason it seems an important problem for women of childbearing age. Adequate periconceptional consumption of folic acid could prevent NTDs. Most women are unaware of this recommendation. The objectives of this study were to evaluate women' knowledge and beliefs with regard to folic acid, and to...
