On the Performance Characterization of Stereo and Space Carving

The performance evaluation of 3-D reconstruction techniques is not a simple problem to solve. This is not only due to the increased dimensionality of the problem but also due to the lack of standardized and widely accepted testing methodologies. This paper presents characterization to the performance of two standard 3-D reconstruction techniques; stereo and space carving. The evaluation is performed on the same data set using an image re-projection technique to reduce the dimensionality of the evaluation domain and convert the the problem into an image quality assessment problem. Also, different measuring strategies are presented and applied to the stereo and space carving reconstructions. These measures proved great consistency in measuring the performance of the techniques under test. The experimental results show the comparison between stereo and space carving in terms of 3-D reconstruction resolution and color inconsistency effects.
