Oxidation of urinary pregnane-17,20-diols (17.oxogenic steroids) by sodium metaperiodate is complete within 10 mm at 55#{176}C if the concentration of sodium metaperiodate at the end of the reaction exceeds 1.5 X 10-SM. A safe excess of sodium metaperiodate is present if assay samples, after incubation for 10 mm at 55#{176}C in 3 X 10-EM ethylene glycol, give a positive test with starch-iodide paper.
