Radar calibration using consistency of polarization parameters and constraints for drop shapes

چکیده
The accuracy of radar-based rain rates is limited by the calibration of radar reflectivity (ZH), which must be measured within 1 dB for rainfall estimates to have an accuracy of 15%. Several approaches to radar calibration have been undertaken which are summarized in Atlas (2002). The receive component of the radar can be calibrated using a transmitter with a known signal strength. Transmit and receive components can be calibrated jointly by positioning a reflective target with a known radar crosssection into the radar beam using aircraft, a balloon, etc. Another approach is to compare radar reflectivity to disdrometer measurements as in Joss et al. (1968). The relative calibrations of the US Weather Service Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88Ds) have also been explored by comparisons with space-borne radar (Bolen and Chandrasekar 2000) and neighboring WSR-88D radars (Gourley et al. 2003). None of these approaches has emerged as the standard procedure for calibrating radars.

Absolute Calibration of Radar Reflectivity Using Redundancy of the Polarization Observations and Implied Constraints on Drop Shapes
A major limitation of improved radar-based rainfall estimation is accurate calibration of radar reflectivity. In this paper, the authors fully automate a polarimetric method that uses the consistency between radar reflectivity, differential reflectivity, and the path integral of specific differential phase to calibrate reflectivity. Complete instructions are provided such that this study can se...
متن کاملCalibration Issues of Dual-Polarization Radar Measurements
Techniques for the absolute calibration of radar reflectivity Z and differential reflectivity ZDR measured with dual-polarization weather radars are examined herein. Calibration of Z is based on the idea of self-consistency among Z, ZDR, and the specific differential phase KDP in rain. Extensive spatial and temporal averaging is used to derive the average values of ZDR and KDP for each 1 dB ste...
متن کاملRain microstructure retrievals using 2-D video disdrometer and C-band polarimetric radar
Measurements using the 2-D video disdrometer (2DVD) taken during a heavy rainfall event in Huntsville, Alabama, are analysed. The 2DVD images were processed to derive the rain microstructure parameters for each individual drop, which in turn were used as input to the T-matrix method to compute the forward and back scatter amplitudes of each drop at C-band. The polarimetric radar variables were ...
متن کاملThe Need to Represent Raindrop Size Spectra as Normalized Gamma Distributions for the Interpretation of Polarization Radar Observations
Polarization radar techniques essentially rely on detecting the oblateness of raindrops to provide a measure of mean raindrop size and then using this information to give a better estimate of rainfall rate R than is available from radar reflectivity Z alone. To derive rainfall rates from these new parameters such as differential reflectivity ZDR and specific differential phase shift KDP and to ...
متن کاملComparison of Two Raindrop Size Distribution Retrieval Algorithms for X-Band Dual Polarization Observations
In this study the authors evaluate two algorithms, the so-called beta ( ) and constrained methods, proposed for retrieving the governing parameters of the “normalized” gamma drop size distribution (DSD) from dual-polarization radar measurements. The method treats the drop axis ratio as a variable and computes drop shape and DSD parameters from radar reflectivity (ZH), differential reflectivity ...
