Brain weight increases resulting from environmental enrichment: a directional dominance in mice.
نویسنده
چکیده
A genetic analysis of brain weights of 544 mice reared in either enriched or standard laboratory environments indicated significant directional dominance in the percentage of increase in brain weight as a result of enrichment.

Environmental enrichment increases the GFAP+ stem cell pool and reverses hypoxia-induced cognitive deficits in juvenile mice.
Premature children born with very low birth weight (VLBW) can suffer chronic hypoxic injury as a consequence of abnormal lung development and cardiovascular abnormalities, often leading to grave neurological and behavioral consequences. Emerging evidence suggests that environmental enrichment improves outcome in animal models of adult brain injury and disease; however, little is known about the...
متن کاملEnvironmental enrichment protects against functional deficits caused by traumatic brain injury
Environmental enrichment (EE) increases cortical weight, neuronal density, dendritic branching, and angiogenesis, all of which may be critical for functional recovery following insult. Our study was designed to determine possible benefits of pre-exposure to EE in preventing functional deficits following traumatic brain injury (TBI) to the prefrontal cortex. To examine the benefit of EE, adult m...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the presence of a dominance rank in a group of cats and the relation between agonistic behavior and the use of resources, including environmental enrichment, in these cats. DESIGN Observational analytic study. ANIMALS 27 neutered cats in a shelter in Sao Paulo, Brazil. PROCEDURES The cats were video recorded for 4 consecutive days to obtain baseline data. Subsequentl...
متن کاملAge-dependent effects of environmental enrichment on spatial reference memory in male mice.
Although environmental enrichment has been shown to improve various types of memory in young and aging mice, no study has directly compared the degree to which enrichment improves memory at different ages throughout the lifespan in male mice. Therefore, the present study investigated the effects of long-term continuous enrichment in young (3 months), middle-aged (15 months), and aged (21 months...
متن کاملBeneficial effects of environmental enrichment and food entrainment in the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease
BACKGROUND In addition to their cognitive and motor deficits, R6/2 mice show a progressive disintegration in circadian rhythms that mirrors the problems associated with sleep-wake disturbances experienced by patients with Huntington's disease (HD). It has been shown previously that motor and cognitive performance, as well as survival, can be improved in transgenic mouse models of HD through the...
