چکیده
In this paper we discuss field observations and modeling results examining the connection between flow-induced stratification and gravitational circulation. We present simultaneous ADCP and top and bottom salinity records collected by the USGS showing that density-driven flows are highly intermittent, with strong gravitational circulation accompanying stratification episodes. Tidal variations in gravitational circulation appear to be linked to tide-induced vertical mixing and to the strain-induced periodic stratification (SIPS) that i s typically found in Northern San Francisco Bay. Results obtained using a ID water column model suggest that there exists a critical condition where tidal mixing is unable to overcome the creation of stratification by advection. Variability of observed stratification i s better explained by a parameter which explicitly considers SIPS, and thus which depends explicitly on the longitudinal salinity gradient, than i t i s by a similar parameter based on flow.

Shear Production and Dissipation in a Stratified Tidal Flow
The long term goal of this work is to understand the physics of turbulent stratified shear flows as might be found in coastal regions and estuaries where both shear and stratification are strong. It is our hypothesis that turbulence under these conditions of active generation may function in a way that is fundamentally different from weak turbulence below the thermocline (or above the bottom mi...
متن کاملThree-dimensional wave-coupled hydrodynamics modeling in South San Francisco Bay
In this paper, we present a numerical model to simulate wind waves and hydrodynamics in the estuary. We employ the unstructured-grid SUNTANS model for hydrodynamics, and within this model we implement a spectral wave model which solves for transport of wave action density with the finite-volume formulation. Hydrodynamics is coupled to the wave field through the radiation stress. Based on the un...
متن کاملContrasting Seasonal and Fortnightly Variations in the Circulation of a Seasonally Inverse Estuary, Elkhorn Slough, California
Three and a half years of hydrographic, velocity, and meteorological observations are used to examine the dynamics of upper Elkhorn Slough, a seasonally inverse, shallow, mesotidal estuary in central California. The long-term observations revealed that residual circulation in Elkhorn Slough is seasonally variable, with classic estuarine circulation in the winter and inverse estuarine circulatio...
متن کاملThermal Variability in a Tidal River
In this paper, we discuss observations of temperature variability in the tidal portion of the San Joaquin River in California. The San Joaquin River makes up the southern portion of the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta, the eastern end of San Francisco Bay. Observations made in August 2004 and August 2005 show significant diurnal variations in temperature in response to surface heat exchange. Howev...
متن کاملEpisodic circulation and exchange in a wave-driven coral reef and lagoon system
We examined the role of wave-driven circulation relative to wind and buoyancy forcing in a coral reef–lagoon system. Circulation measurements in Paopao Bay, Moorea, French Polynesia, during austral summer show the importance of waves in driving flows over the reef crest, through the lagoon, and out the reef pass. Tides were comparatively weak, due to proximity to amphidromic points, and exhibit...
