Jet velocity in SS 433: its anti-correlation with precession-cone angle and a dependence on orbital phase
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a re-analysis of the optical spectroscopic data on SS 433 from the last quarter-century and demonstrate that these data alone contain systematic and identifiable deviations from the traditional kinematical model for the jets: variations in jet speed which agree with our analysis of recent radio data, in precession cone angle and in phase. We present a simple technique for separating out the jet speed from the angular properties of the jet axis, assuming only that the jets are symmetric. With this technique, the archival optical data additionally reveal that the variations in jet speed and in precession-cone angle are anticorrelated in the sense that when faster jet bolides are ejected the cone opening angle is smaller. We also find speed oscillations as a function of orbital phase. Subject headings: Stars: Binaries: Close, Radio Continuum: Stars, Stars: Individual: SS 433

متن کاملFluctuations and symmetry in the speed and direction of the jets of SS 433 on different timescales
Context. The Galactic microquasar SS 433 launches oppositely-directed plasma jets at speeds approximately a quarter of the speed of light along an axis which precesses, tracing out a cone of polar angle 20 degrees. Both the speed and direction of launch of the bolides that comprise the jets exhibit small fluctuations. Aims. To present new results on variations in speed and direction of successi...
متن کاملSymmetry in the changing jets of SS 433 and its true distance from us
We present the deepest yet radio image of the Galactic jet source, SS 433, which reveals over two full precession cycles (> 2×163 days) of the jet axis. Systematic and identifiable deviations from the traditional kinematical model for the jets are found: variations in jet speed, lasting for as long as tens of days, are necessary to match the detailed structure of each jet. It is remarkable that...
متن کامل“Magic Angle Precession”
An advanced and exact geometric description of nonlinear precession dynamics modeling very accurately natural and artificial couplings showing Lorentz symmetry is derived. In the linear description it is usually ignored that the geometric phase of relativistic motion couples back to the orbital motion providing for a non-linear recursive precession dynamics. The high coupling strength in the no...
متن کاملSs 433: the Second Wolf-rayet X-ray Binary ?
We present mid-infrared spectrophotometric observations of SS 433 with ISOPHOT. The HeI+HeII lines in both spectra of SS 433 and of the Wolf-Rayet star WR147, a wind-colliding WN8+BO5 binary system, closely match. The 2.5-12 μm continuum radiation is due to an expanding wind free-free emission in an intermediate case between optically thick and optically thin regimes. The inferred mass loss rat...
