چکیده

Abstract On the basis of angular spectrum representation, a formalism describing paraxial beams propagating through an isotropic left-handed material (LHM) slab is presented. The treatment allows us to introduce the ideas of beam focusing and phase compensation by LHM slab. Because of the negative refractive index of LHM slab, the inverse Gouy phase shift and the negative Rayleigh length of paraxial Gaussian beam are proposed. It is shown that the phase difference caused by the Gouy phase shift in right-handed material (RHM) can be compensated by that caused by the inverse Gouy phase shift in LHM. If certain matching conditions are satisfied, the intensity and phase distributions at object plane can be completely reconstructed at the image plane.

Numerical simulations of the recently derived fully nonlinear equations of motion for weakly threedimensional water waves [V.P. Ruban, Phys. Rev. E 71, 055303(R) (2005)] with quasi-random initial conditions are reported, which show the spontaneous formation of a single extreme wave on the deep water. This rogue wave behaves in an oscillating manner and exists for a relatively long time (many wa...

Humidity and C n data collected from the Chesapeake Bay area during the 2003/2004 period have been analyzed. We demonstrate that there is an unequivocal correlation between the data during the same time periods, in the absence of solar insolation. This correlation manifests itself as an inverse relationship. We suggest that C n in the infrared region is also function of humidity, in addition to...

Density functional methods were developed, in which the Coulomb electron-electron interaction is split into a longand a short-range part. In such methods, one term is calculated using traditional density functional approximations, like the local density approximation. The present paper tries to shed some light upon the best way to do it by comparing the accuracy of the local density approximati...
