Testing the Ability of 2-dimensional Vortex Methods to Reproduce Simulations of Nearly Inviscid Vortex Dynamics

چکیده
In two dimensions, vorticity is materially conserved in an invisicid environment. Additionally, if the fluid is nondivergent, the velocity field can be determined from a solution to the Poisson equation relating velocity and vorticity. Vortex methods translate these well-known facts as well as the ability to capture the time evolution of Lagrangian particles into a method of representing the flow evolutions of initially defined vorticity fields (Leonard 1980). Although vortex methods are now also used to model the development of three-dimensional flows with or without viscosity, they evolved from the adherence to two fundamental equations.

We present a scaling theory for unforced inviscid two-dimensional turbulence. Our model unifies existing spatial and temporal scaling theories. The theory is based on a self-similar distribution of vortices of different sizes A. Our model uniquely determines the spatial and temporal scaling of the associated vortex number density which allows the determination of the energy spectra and the vort...
