چکیده

A method was developed for the preparation of microcapsules containing a reactive amine with potential applications in self-healing polymers. Amine core microcapsules were prepared by interfacial polymerization of an isocyanate and an amine stabilized by an inverse Pickering emulsion. Microcapsules were successfully isolated, dried, and redispersed in epoxy. Visualization of capsules in cured epoxy was carried out by the addition of fluorescent dye to the corematerial.Mass spectrometry of capsule corematerial indicated the presence of the desired starting material. Fill content was estimated at 55 wt % by thermogravimetric analysis, and titration of the capsule core material gave an amine equivalent weight of 254 g/mol NH2. Capsules released the core material upon rupture and were able to cure epoxy to form a polymer film.

Investigation of Capsulated Epoxy and DCPD in Epoxy Based Self-healing Composites - DFT Calculation and Experimental Analysis

Epoxy and dicyclopentadien (DCPD) are two common healing agents, which are introduced into epoxy matrix through encapsulation in order to prepare self-healing composites. In a comparative study, the compatibility of healing agents and epoxy matrix is investigated through experimental tests and DFT calculations. The interaction energy is considered to be the determinative parameter in DFT calcul...

Dynamic Characteristics of Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Epoxy Composites: An Experimental Approach

The effects of amine functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and CNTs weight percent (wt. %), on the first bending natural frequencies and damping properties of CNT/epoxy composites are investigated in this paper. CNTs and amine functionalized CNTs (AFCNTs), with two different weight percentages, are used to manufacture the beam shaped specimens. Epoxy, CNT/epoxy (0.25 and 0.5 wt. % of CNT...

Experimental Study on Amine-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes’ Effect on the Thermomechanical Properties of CNT/Epoxy Nano-composites

This paper investigated the effect of the amine-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the thermomechanical properties of CNT/epoxy nanocomposites. Mechanical stirring and ultra-sonication were utilized to uniformly disperse CNTs into the epoxy matrix. Non-functionalized and amine-functionalized CNTs with different weight percentages (wt. %) were mixed into the epoxy resin. Using standard te...

Self-healing thermoset using encapsulated epoxy-amine healing chemistry

Self-healing was achieved with a dual-microcapsule epoxy-amine chemistry in thermoset epoxy. One capsule contained a modified aliphatic polyamine (EPIKURE 3274) while the second capsule contained a diluted epoxy monomer (EPON 815C). Amine microcapsules were prepared by vacuum infiltration of EPIKURE 3274 into hollow polymeric microcapsules. Epoxy microcapsules were prepared by an in situ polyme...
