Equimodular curves

چکیده

This paper is motivated by a problem that arises in the study of partition functions of antiferromagnetic Potts models, including as a special case the chromatic polynomial. It relies on a theorem of Beraha, Kahane and Weiss, which asserts that the zeros of certain sequences of polynomials approach the curves on which a matrix has two eigenvalues with equal modulus. It is shown that (in general) the equimodular curves comprise a number of segments, the end-points of which are the roots of a polynomial equation, representing the vanishing of a discriminant. The segments are in bijective correspondence with the double roots of another polynomial equation, which is significantly simpler than the discriminant equation. Singularities of the segments can occur, corresponding to the vanishing of a Jacobian. These results are illustrated by explicit calculations in a specific case. How to Prove That a Preconditioner Cannot Be Superlinear

In the general case of multilevel Toeplitz matrices, we recently proved that any multilevel circulant preconditioner is not superlinear (a cluster it may provide cannot be proper). The proof was based on the concept of quasi-equimodular matrices, although this concept does not apply, for example, to the sine-transform matrices. In this paper, with a new concept of partially equimodular matrices...

Optimal Gerschgorin-type inclusion intervals of singular values

In this paper, some optimal inclusion intervals of matrix singular values are discussed in the set A of matrices equimodular with matrix A. These intervals can be obtained by extensions of the Gerschgorintype theorem for singular values, based only on the use of positive scale vectors and their intersections. Theoretic analysis and numerical examples show that upper bounds of these intervals ar...

An Efficient Reliable Algorithm for the Approximation of All Polynomial Roots Based on the Method of D. Bernoulli

The present versions of Bernoulli’s method use quotients of successive sums of powers of the roots to extract dominant roots. These algorithms can be ameliorated considerably through two new basic results, namely, a recursion formula for the quotients just mentioned and a representation of the minimal absolute value of the roots only using the quotients calculated earlier. In the case of (nearl...

A note on superspecial and maximal curves

In this note we review a simple criterion, due to Ekedahl, for superspecial curves defined over finite fields.Using this we generalize and give some simple proofs for some well-known superspecial curves.
