Regarding compass response functions for modeling path integration

چکیده
Recently Haferlach, Wessnitzer, Mangan and Webb (2007) reported producing a novel neural model of the animal behaviour known as path integration, a navigation process requiring a compass and odometer. Here we comment on comparisons that that paper makes with our earlier work, (Vickerstaff & Di Paolo, 2005) where we also evolved a neural model of path integration. The authors make prominent mention of the similarity of their compass sensors to the known properties of the polarisation-sensitive (POL) neurons found in insects. They give the impression that their compass response function, expressed as a dot-product equation (p. 274, eqn. 1, see below), has a closer similarity to POL neurons than does the cosine function we employed AgResearch Ltd, Lincoln Research Centre, Cnr Springs Road and Gerald Street, Private Bag 4749, Christchurch 8140, New Zealand Department of Zoology, School of Biological Sciences, University of Canterbury, Private Bag 4800, Christchurch, New Zealand. متن کاملOcelli contribute to the encoding of celestial compass information in the Australian desert ant Melophorus bagoti.
Many animal species, including some social hymenoptera, use the visual system for navigation. Although the insect compound eyes have been well studied, less is known about the second visual system in some insects, the ocelli. Here we demonstrate navigational functions of the ocelli in the visually guided Australian desert ant Melophorus bagoti. These ants are known to rely on both visual landma...
متن کاملEvolving neural models of path integration.
We use a genetic algorithm to evolve neural models of path integration, with particular emphasis on reproducing the homing behaviour of Cataglyphis fortis ants. This is done within the context of a complete model system, including an explicit representation of the animal's movements within its environment. We show that it is possible to produce a neural network without imposing a priori any par...
متن کاملIntegrating two-dimensional paths: do desert ants process distance information in the absence of celestial compass cues?
When performing foraging trips desert ants of the genus Cataglyphis continuously process and update a ;home vector' that enables them to return to their nest on the shortest route. This capacity of path integration requires two types of information: (i) information about the travelling directions, and (ii) odometric information about the distances travelled in a particular direction. We have in...
متن کاملMulti Objective Scheduling of Utility-scale Energy Storages and Demand Response Programs Portfolio for Grid Integration of Wind Power
Increasing the penetration of variable wind generation in power systems has created some new challenges in the power system operation. In such a situation, the inclusion of flexible resources which have the potential of facilitating wind power integration is necessary. Demand response (DR) programs and emerging utility-scale energy storages (ESs) are known as two powerful flexible tools that ca...
