چکیده

The taxonomic and systematic history of the South American silversides has changed significantly since Campos (1984) review. As a result of phylogenetic studies of the subfamilies Menidiinae (Chernoff, 1986b), Atherinopsinae (White, 1985; Crabtree, 1987; Dyer 1997, 1998) and of the order Atheriniformes (Saeed et al., 1994; Dyer and Chernoff, 1996) the taxonomy and classification of silversides has changed notoriously (Table I). Two systematic studies with different methodologies and divergent results in many ways coincided in that the subfamilies Menidiinae and Atherinopsinae, traditionally considered as atherinids, were to form part of the family Atherinopsidae (Saeed et al., 1994; Dyer and Chernoff, 1996). The purpose of this paper is to review the present state of the systematics (taxonomy, relationships and distribution) of the South American silversides in the context of phylogenetic revisions of Atheriniformes and Atherinopsinae. All systematic results presented herein are based on published material (Dyer and Chernoff, 1996; Dyer, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003a,b; Dyer and Gosztonyi, 1999; Malabarba and Dyer, 2002). In addition to some diagnostic features of the taxa involved (genera, tribes, subfamilies, and families), an identification key and some identification and diagnostic problems, are presented.

Adaptive radiation and hybridization in Wallace's Dreamponds: evidence from sailfin silversides in the Malili Lakes of Sulawesi.

Adaptive radiations are extremely useful to understand factors driving speciation. A challenge in speciation research is to distinguish forces creating novelties and those relevant to divergence and adaptation. Recently, hybridization has regained major interest as a potential force leading to functional novelty and to the genesis of new species. Here, we show that introgressive hybridization i...

It's a family matter: molecular phylogenetics of Atheriniformes and the polyphyly of the surf silversides (family: Notocheiridae).

Phylogenetic relationships among families of Atheriniformes have long been problematic. The affinities of one of the most enigmatic lineages, surf silversides (Notocheiridae), have proven particularly elusive due to this taxon's unique morphology and rarity in museum collections. In this study, we use mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data to generate a phylogeny for seven of the eight familie...

Sneaky egg-eating in Telmatherina sarasinorum, an endemic fish from Sulawesi

The Malili Lakes of south-central Sulawesi, Indonesia, recently hailed as ‘Wallace’s Dreamponds’ (Herder et al., 2006a), are gaining recognition as a powerful model system for studying adaptive radiation in a variety of organisms, including crabs, snails (von Rintelen et al., 2004; von Rintelen & Glaubrecht, 2005) and fishes (Roy et al., 2004; Gray & McKinnon, 2006; Herder et al., 2006a). Repeatability of clades as a criterion of reliability: a case study for molecular phylogeny of Acanthomorpha (Teleostei) with larger number of taxa.

Although much progress has been made recently in teleostean phylogeny, relationships among the main lineages of the higher teleosts (Acanthomorpha), containing more than 60% of all fish species, remain poorly defined. This study represents the most extensive taxonomic sampling effort to date to collect new molecular characters for phylogenetic analysis of acanthomorph fishes. We compiled and an...

Transcriptomic differentiation underlying marine‐to‐freshwater transitions in the South American silversides Odontesthes argentinensis and O. bonariensis (Atheriniformes)

Salinity gradients are critical habitat determinants for freshwater organisms. Silverside fishes in the genus Odontesthes have recently and repeatedly transitioned from marine to freshwater habitats, overcoming a strong ecological barrier. Genomic and transcriptomic changes involved in this kind of transition are only known for a few model species. We present new data and analyses of gene expre...
