چکیده

BACKGROUND This study aims to present a novel method for using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) to non-invasively quantify the variation in pulmonary blood volume throughout the cardiac cycle in humans. METHODS 10 healthy volunteers (7 males, 3 female, age range 21-32 years) were studied. The blood flow in the pulmonary artery and all pulmonary veins was quantified during free breathing using phase contrast velocity encoded CMR. The difference in flow between the pulmonary artery and the pulmonary veins was integrated to calculate the change in pulmonary blood volume throughout the cardiac cycle. RESULTS The stroke volumes in the pulmonary artery and the sum of the pulmonary veins were (mean +/- SEM) 103 +/- 6 ml and 95 +/- 6 ml, respectively. The pulmonary blood volume variation (PBVV) was 48 +/- 5 ml, and the PBVV expressed as percent of the pulmonary artery stroke volume was 46 +/- 3%. The maximum increase in pulmonary blood volume occurred 310 +/- 12 ms after the R-wave from the ECG (32 +/- 2% of the cardiac cycle). PBVV did not correlate to change in cross-sectional area in the pulmonary artery (R2 = 0.03, p = 0.66). CONCLUSION It is feasible to non-invasively quantify the change in pulmonary blood volume during the cardiac cycle in humans using CMR. The average pulmonary blood volume variation in healthy volunteers was approximately 50 ml and this was approximately 50% of the stroke volume. Further studies are needed to assess the utility of the pulmonary blood volume variation as a measure for identifying cardiac and pulmonary vascular disease.

Presentation of a Non-invasive Method of Estimating Arterial Stiffness by Modeling Blood Flow and Arterial Wall Based on the Determination of Elastic Module of Arterial Wall

Introduction: Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of cardiovascular risk. Several indices have been  introduced to estimate the arterial stiffness based on the changes in the brachial blood pressure. Since the  substitution  of  the  blood  pressure  changes  in  the  central  arteries  such  as  carotid  with  the  blood  pressure  changes in the brachial results in error in the blood...

Prognostic value of cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging measurements corrected for age and sex in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.

BACKGROUND There are limited data on the prognostic value of cardiovascular magnetic resonance measurements in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension, with no studies investigating the impact of correction of cardiovascular magnetic resonance indices for age and sex on prognostic value. METHODS AND RESULTS Consecutive patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension underwent card...

Blood Flow Simulation in an Aorta with a mild coarctation Using Magnetic Resonance Angiography and Finite Volume Method

Coarctation of the aorta is one of the five main congenital cardiovascular failures, accounting for 6–8 percent of these failures. This research aimed to simulate the blood flow of a seventeen-year-old male teen with a mild coarctation at one-third of his aorta's descending branch. The simulation was performed by extracting the domain and the input pulsatile velocity signal as the boundary cond...

Non-invasive evaluation of pulmonary arterial blood flow and wall shear stress in pulmonary arterial hypertension with 3D phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging

BACKGROUND Recently, time-resolved 3D phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (4D-flow) allows flow dynamics in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension to be measured. Abnormal flow dynamics, such as vortex blood flow pattern in the pulmonary artery (PA), may reflect progression of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Some reports suggested that abnormal blood flow parameters includin...

Three dimensional three component whole heart cardiovascular magnetic resonance velocity mapping: comparison of flow measurements from 3D and 2D acquisitions

BACKGROUND Two-dimensional, unidirectionally encoded, cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) velocity mapping is an established technique for the quantification of blood flow in large vessels. However, it requires an operator to correctly align the planes of acquisition. If all three directional components of velocity are measured for each voxel of a 3D volume through the phases of the cardiac...
