چکیده

Fault localization is a major activity in program debugging. To automate this time-consuming task, many existing fault-localization techniques compare passed executions and failed executions, and suggest suspicious program elements, such as predicates or statements, to facilitate the identification of faults. To do that, these techniques propose statistical models and use hypothesis testing methods to test the similarity or dissimilarity of proposed program features between passed and failed executions. Furthermore, when applying their models, these techniques presume that the feature spectra come from populations with specific distributions. The accuracy of using a model to describe feature spectra is related to and may be affected by the underlying distribution of the feature spectra, and the use of a (sound) model on inapplicable circumstances to describe real-life feature spectra may lower the effectiveness of these fault-localization techniques. In this paper, we make use of hypothesis testing methods as the core concept in developing a predicate-based fault-localization framework. We report a controlled experiment to compare, within our framework, the efficacy, scalability, and efficiency of applying three categories of hypothesis testing methods, namely, standard non-parametric hypothesis testing methods, standard parametric hypothesis testing methods, and debugging-specific parametric testing methods. We also conduct a case study to compare the effectiveness of the winner of these three categories with the effectiveness of 33 existing statement-level fault-localization techniques. The experimental results show that the use of non-parametric hypothesis testing methods in our proposed predicatebased fault-localization model is the most promising.

Is non-parametric hypothesis testing model robust for statistical fault localization?

Fault localization is one of the most difficult activities in software debugging. Many existing statistical faultlocalization techniques estimate the fault positions of programs by comparing the program feature spectra between passed runs and failed runs. Some existing approaches develop estimation formulas based on mean values of the underlying program feature spectra and their distributions a...

On the adoption of MC/DC and control-flow adequacy for a tight integration of program testing and statistical fault localization

Context: Testing and debugging consume a significant portion of software development effort. Both processes are usually conducted independently despite their close relationship with each other. Test adequacy is vital for developers to assure that sufficient testing effort has been made, while finding all the faults in a program as soon as possible is equally important. A tight integration betwe...

Measurement selection for parametric IC fault diagnosis

This paper describes experimental results obtained with the use of measurement reduction for statistical IC fault diagnosis. The reduction method used involves data pre-processing in a fashion consistent with a specific definition of parametric faults. The effects of this preprocessing are examined. 1 Introduction An integrated circuit test is specified by a combination of input and output sign...

A New Performance Characterization of Transient Analysis Method

This paper proposes a new performance characterization for the test strategy intended for second order filters denominated Transient Analysis Method (TRAM). We evaluate the ability of the addressed test strategy for detecting deviation faults under simultaneous statistical fluctuation of the non-faulty parameters. For this purpose, we use Monte Carlo simulations and a fault model that considers...

FPA-FL: Incorporating Static Fault-proneness Analysis into Statistical Fault Localization

Despite the proven applicability of the statistical methods in automatic fault localization, these approaches are biased by data collected from different executions of the program. This biasness could result in unstable statistical models which may vary dependent on test data provided for trial executions of the program. To resolve the difficulty, in this article a new ‘fault-proneness’-aware s...
