چکیده

We discuss the effects of surfaces on bulk plasma oscillations in a metallic film of thickness L. The leading corrections to the plasma frequencies due to the surfaces are proportional to L−1. The frequencies of low-lying long wavelength modes are given by the dispersion relation of bulk modes, ω = ωp[1 + α(q 2/k2 F )], where the allowed q-values are q(n) = (nπ/L), L ≡ L− 2db, and db is a complex length characteristic of the surface (reminiscent of but different from Feibelman’s d⊥). An explicit expression for db is derived. Resonant excitation by an external field, E0e −iωt, is calculated.

Bulk and surface plasmon polariton excitation in RuO₂ for low-loss plasmonic applications in NIR.

Transition-metal oxides, such as RuO₂, offer an exciting alternative to conventional metals for metamaterials and plasmonic applications due to their low optical losses in the visible and near-infrared ranges. In this manuscript we report observation of optically excited surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and bulk plasmons in RuO₂ thin films grown using DC reactive magnetron sputtering on glass ...

Resolution and sensitivity in surface plasmon microscopy and sensing

The use of surface plasmons on planar surfaces for the characterisation of those surfaces is analysed. In particular, analytic expressions are derived for the sensitivity of such characterisation to the variation of bulk refractive indices, and to the addition of thin dielectric layers on the plasmon supporting surface. Comparison between surface plasmon and dielectric waveguide techniques is m...

Plasmonics in Topological Insulators

With strong spin-orbit coupling, topological insulators have an insulating bulk state, characterized by a band gap, and a conducting surface state, characterized by a Dirac cone. Plasmons in topological insulators show high frequency-tunability in the mid-infrared and terahertz spectral regions with transverse spin oscillations, also called “spin-plasmons”. This paper presents a discussion and ...

Separation of bulk and surface-losses in low-loss EELS measurements in STEM.

To identify major features in low electron energy loss spectra, the different excitations (bulk plasmons, interband transitions, surface plasmons, Cherenkov and surface guided modes) must be delineated from each other. In this paper, this process is achieved by noting the linear thickness dependence of bulk processes contrasted with the constant thickness behavior of surface excitations. An alt...

Optimal self-referenced sensing using long- and short- range surface plasmons.

Dual-mode surface-plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors use both long- and short- range surface plasmon waves to differentiate surface binding interactions from interfering bulk effects. We have optimized the design of these sensors for minimum surface limit of detection (LOD) using a Cramer-Rao lower bound for spectral shift estimation. Despite trade-offs between resonance width, minimum reflectivit...
