Survey of the Plant Kingdom for the Ability to Bind Heavy Metals through Phytochelatins
نویسندگان
چکیده
Differentiated plants and suspension cultures of the taxonomic divisions Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, and Spermatophyta have been investigated as to their ability to detoxify heavy metals like Cd2+ through the formation o f (y-Glu —Cys)„—Giy peptides, the phytochelatins. Over 200 individual plants have been checked and there was not a single exception observed. Only in the order Fabales several species mainly o f the tribus Fabaceae form upon exposure to Cd2+ ions peptides o f the general structure (y-Glu — Cys),, —ß-Ala, the homo-phytochelatins. The existence of glutathione and homo-glutathione within a given species determines whether phytochelatins or their homo-derivatives are formed. The ability to form phytochelatins for metal homeostasis and metal detoxification is a principal feature o f plant metabolism.

Brassinosteroids and Response of Plants to Heavy Metals Action
Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a widespread group of plant hormones. These phytohormones play a crucial role in the regulation of growth and development of various plant species, and they demonstrate high biological activity. BRs are considered to demonstrate protective activity in the plants exposed to various stresses. Due to rapid industrialization and urbanization, heavy metals have become one ...
متن کاملCadmium Accumulation by Plants of Brassicaceae Family and Its Connection with Their Primary and Secondary Metabolism
The mustard family – Brassicaceae – is well known as family of plants, metallophytes, which are able to accumulate wide range of heavy metals and metalloids, especially zinc and cadmium, but also nickel, thallium, chromium and selenium. Ecological importance of this process consists partially in plants themselves to survive negative environmental conditions. There are two basic different strate...

Contamination of soil with heavy metals has detrimental effects on ecosystems, because heavy metals accumulated in soil may persist and affect terrestrial ecosystems for a long time. Phytoremediation, as sustainable, low-cost and environmental friendly technology based on the direct use of plants for in situ remediation of contaminated soil, sludges, sediments, and ground water through contamin...
متن کاملOverexpression of glutathione synthetase in indian mustard enhances cadmium accumulation and tolerance
An important pathway by which plants detoxify heavy metals is through sequestration with heavy-metal-binding peptides called phytochelatins or their precursor, glutathione. To identify limiting factors for heavy-metal accumulation and tolerance, and to develop transgenic plants with an increased capacity to accumulate and/or tolerate heavy metals, the Escherichia coli gshII gene encoding glutat...
متن کاملPhytotoxic Effects of Heavy Metals on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Medical Plant, Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis L.)
To assess the phytotoxicity of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) on seed germination and seedling growth of Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis L.), experiments were performed in different aqueous concentrations (50, 100 and 150μM) of aforementioned heavy metals over the period of 14 sequential days. The results showed that heavy metals adversely affect the normal gro...
