چکیده

The pattern VEP is frequently abnormal in multiple sclerosis. In this disease the VEP latency is prolonged and the amplitude is reduced. The use of the VEP amplitude in diagnosis is limited because of the large interand intrasubject variability and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Goal of this project is to improve the SNR of VEP’s with alternative averaging procedures, and to investigate whether VEP latency jitter and SNR are supplementary parameters in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. I!,laka The latency variability of “single” VEP responses is estimated and corrected by means of a spectral phase difference (SPD) method. The achieved improvement is expressed by the SNR of the VEP ensemble. li!cuks In a comparitive study of a control group consisting of 29 healthy subjects and a group of 30 patients we found that in the original VEP data of the multiple sclerosis group the latency jitter was significantly (p<O.OS) higher, and the SNR significantly @<0.05) lower. Correction of latency jitter resulted in a small increase of the SNR in the control group, and a significant increase in the MS group. Conclusions The developed jitter correction method resulted in better VEP estimates in patients of the MS group, and provided the clinician with two additional VEP parameters: signal-to-noise ratio and latency jitter. Further research is necessary to investigate whether this can lead to an increased diagnostic power of visual evoked potentials.

Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials in eyes with macular holes and their fellow eyes.

PURPOSE To investigate whether the pattern reversal visual evoked potential can be useful in the diagnosis and management of macular hole patients. METHODS The pattern reversal visual evoked potential was measured in 66 patients with a macular hole and in 43 healthy control subjects. Check sizes of 34', 17' and 10' were applied. RESULTS Results showed that, for the check sizes of 34', 17' a...

Comparison of the Wave Amplitude of Visually Evoked Potential in Amblyopic Eyes between Patients with Esotropia and Anisometropia and a Normal Group

Background: We compared the wave amplitude of visually evoked potential (VEP) between patients with esotropic and anisometropic amblyopic eyes and a normal group. Methods: The wave amplitude of VEP was documented in 2 groups of persons with amblyopia (15 with esotropia and 28 with anisometropia) and 1 group of individuals with normal visual acuity (n, 15). The amplitude of P100 was recorded mono...

Visually evoked potentials in eccentrically and centrally fixing amblyopes.

Visually evoked potentials to checkerboard pattern reversal were found to be nearly five times larger in eccentrically fixing amblyopic eyes than in centrally fixing amblyopic eyes when compared with the fellow non-amblyopic eye. The two groups of amblyopes had comparably poor visual acuity and differed in no other way save in their fixation behaviour. This suggests that at least two neurodevel...

Dysfunction in the fellow eyes of strabismic and anisometropic amblyopic children assessed by visually evoked potentials Alterações dos potenciais visuais evocados nos olhos contralaterais de crianças com ambliopia estrabísmica e anisometrópica

Approved by the following research ethics committee: Federal University of São Paulo (approval no 0503/08). ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate visual acuity and transient pattern reversal (PR) visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in the fellow eyes of children with strabismic and/or anisometropic amblyopia. Methods: Children diagnosed with strabismic and/or anisometropic amblyopia were recruited for elec...

Assessing the Effect of Opium Dependence on Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) in Men

Abstract Background: Opium-dependence having different effects on the nervous system is a common problem, especially in the Middle East and Iran. The aim of this study is evaluating the effects of opium-dependence on visual evoked potential (VEP) in men. Methods: Thirty subjects with both chronic cigarette smoking and opium-dependence (group 1) and 30 subjects with only chronic ciga...
