Guided Image Interpretation in Proteome Analysis

Many biological and medical experiments create image data. Their analysis needs both human and machine intelligence. I propose three principles of enrichment, overlay, and guidance that help in designing an interactive environment for experiment management and data analysis. An application to identify protein spots in series of electrophoresis gels is used as an example. Enrichment means that the automatic analysis should add to the raw data, not substitute them. Overlay means that the analysis results should be presented on the background of the raw data to focus the presentation. Guidance means that the selection of appropriate views is guided by the analysis results to reduce the effort on the user ́s side.
