چکیده

The Atlantic Ocean is a long sinuous ocean which originated during the Mesozoic following the breakup of the supercontinent of Pangea. For most of its length, the eastern and western boundaries are clearly defined by land masses, except where it is separated from the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico by troughs and trenches. The northern and southern limits are more difficult to define. To the north we consider the Atlantic to include the subpolar Greenland and Norwegian Basins. These are linked hydrographically to the rest of the Atlantic, although they are isolated topographically by the ridge system extending between Greenland and Scotland. To the south, the boundary between the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean is generally defined hydrologically by the Subtropical Convergence around 40oS (e.g., Webb, 1996). In this chapter we review current knowledge about the distribution and ecology of organisms on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean from the continental slope to the abyss, and describe the environmental setting that they experience. We focus particularly on the North Atlantic, since the literature for this hemisphere is far more voluminous than for the South Atlantic. As with any large review, we have been selective in our coverage of the regional literature, concentrating on aspects with which we are most familiar, or which have received greatest attention from investigators. Our treatment of the Atlantic intentionally omits hydrothermal vent and seep settings, which are covered in Chapter 4 of this volume. Following a description of the environment of the deep Atlantic, and of the biological communities region by region, we have attempted to synthesize general patterns of faunal density and biomass, community respiration, bioturbation and succession.

Contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August Rainfall over Uganda and Western Kenya

This study investigates the contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August rainfall over Uganda and western Kenya (KU). The study has utilized the datasets including precipitation from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre, North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAOI), South Atlantic Ocean Dipole Index (SAODI), ERA-interim reanalysis, and the Atlantic Ocean Sea Surface Temperature (SST). Singu...

Comparison of Deep-Water Viromes from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea

The aim of this study was to compare the composition of two deep-sea viral communities obtained from the Romanche Fracture Zone in the Atlantic Ocean (collected at 5200 m depth) and the southwest Mediterranean Sea (from 2400 m depth) using a pyro-sequencing approach. The results are based on 18.7% and 6.9% of the sequences obtained from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, respectively...

Variability in the deep and intermediate water circulation of the Atlantic Ocean during the past 25,000 years: Northern Hemisphere modulation of the Southern Ocean

The relative flux of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) out of the Atlantic can be monitored in the Southern Ocean, where high 813C NADW mixes rapidly with low 813C recirculated Pacific water before forming Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). By using 813C measured in benthic foraminifera as a water mass tracer, it is shown that the Southern Ocean was dominated by Pacific water, with little NADW contr...

North Atlantic Deep Water collapse triggered by a Southern Ocean meltwater pulse in a glacial climate state

[1] It is generally accepted that surface freshwater anomalies in the Southern Ocean drive increases in North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) formation via a bipolar density see-saw. We find that a Southern Ocean freshwater pulse of comparable magnitude to meltwater pulse 1A, shuts down, instead of strengthens, NADW in a glacial climate simulation. Unlike the modern-day simulation, the glacial exper...

North Atlantic Deep Water Production during the Last Glacial Maximum

Changes in deep ocean ventilation are commonly invoked as the primary cause of lower glacial atmospheric CO2. The water mass structure of the glacial deep Atlantic Ocean and the mechanism by which it may have sequestered carbon remain elusive. Here we present neodymium isotope measurements from cores throughout the Atlantic that reveal glacial-interglacial changes in water mass distributions. T...

Deep-Sea coral evidence for rapid change in ventilation of the deep north atlantic 15,400 years Ago

Coupled radiocarbon and thorium-230 dates from benthic coral species reveal that the ventilation rate of the North Atlantic upper deep water varied greatly during the last deglaciation. Radiocarbon ages in several corals of the same age, 15.41 +/- 0.17 thousand years, and nearly the same depth, 1800 meters, in the western North Atlantic Ocean increased by as much as 670 years during the 30- to ...
