A baker’s dozen of problems

چکیده

Given a convex plane domain, the billiard ball map sends the incoming ray (the trajectory of the billiard ball) to the outgoing one: the law of reflection is “the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection”. Consider two nested convex domains. Then one has two billiard ball maps, T1 and T2, acting on the oriented lines that intersect both domains. If the domains are bounded by confocal ellipses, then the respective billiard ball maps commute; see, e.g., [32]. Assume that the two maps commute: T1 ◦ T2 = T2 ◦ T1. Conjecture: the two domains are bounded by confocal ellipses. For outer (a.k.a. dual) billiards, an analogous fact is proved in [29]. For piece-wise analytic billiards, this conjecture was proved by A. Glutsyuk [18]. Of course, this problem has a multi-dimensional version, open both for inner and outer billiards.

Exactly K-to-1 Maps: from Pathological Functions with Finitely Many Discontinuities to Well-behaved Covering Maps

Many mathematicians encounter k-to-1 maps only in the study of covering maps. But, of course, k-to-1 maps do not have to be open. This paper touches on covering maps, and simple maps, but concentrates on ordinary k-to-1 functions (both continuous and finitely discontinuous) from one metric continuum to another. New results, old results, and ideas for further research are given; and a baker’s do...

Extending Baker’s theorem

We summarize the combinatorial properties of congruence generation in congruence distributive varieties which are relevant to Baker’s finite basis theorem, explain the extent to which these properties survive in congruence meet-semidistributive varieties, indicate our approach to extending Baker’s theorem to the latter varieties, and pose several problems which our approach does not answer.

Frequency of Baker’s Cysts in Cases of Meniscal Injury

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to investigate 394 subjects. Images were obtained in the three spatial orthogonal planes and evaluated by two expert radiologists. The state of meniscal and cruciate ligaments was recorded and statistical analysis was carried out by bivariate analysis. Out of twenty four of 394 subjects, 24 had Baker’s cysts (6.2%). Meniscal lesions were observed in 200...

A Comment on the Relationship between Judicial Salary and Judicial Quality

Professor Scott Baker was kind enough to present his empirical research on the relationship between judicial salary and judicial quality1 to the Law and Economics Workshop run by Professor Keith Hylton2 and me last fall and I am honored to be able to comment on it today. It is part of a growing body of literature in law that tries to shed light on important issues through statistical analysis. ...
