The role of negative buoyancy in convective Cepheid models. Double-mode pulsations revisited

چکیده

The longstanding problem of modeling double-mode behaviour of classical pulsators was solved with the incorporation of turbulent convection into pulsation hydrocodes. However, the reasons for the computed double-mode behaviour were never clearly identified. In our recent papers (Smolec & Moskalik 2008a,b) we showed that the double-mode behaviour results from the neglect of negative buoyancy effects in some of the hydrocodes. If these effects are taken into account, no stable non-resonant double-mode behaviour can be found. In these proceedings we focus our attention on the role of negative buoyancy effects in classical Cepheid models. Session: STARS convection Individual Objects: double-mode Cepheids

We give a status report of convective Cepheid and RR Lyrae model pulsations. Some striking successes can be reported, despite the use of a rather simple treatment of turbulent convection with a 1D time-dependent diffusion equation for the turbulent energy. It is now possible to obtain stable double-mode (beat) pulsations in both Cepheid and RR Lyrae models with astrophysical parameters, i.e. pe...

On resonant and non-resonant origin of double-mode Cepheid pulsation

Double-mode Cepheid behaviour may arise either from non-resonant or resonant mode interaction. Inclusion of turbulent convection into pulsation codes by Kolláth et al. led to stable double-mode F+1O Cepheid pulsation [1]. However, our recent computations indicate, that these models resulted from incorrect neglect of negative buoyancy effects [2]. Once these effects are taken into account, only ...

Nonlinear Pulsations of Convective Stellar Models

We review the numerical modelling of the nonlinear pulsations of classical variable stars with hydrocodes that include the effects of turbulent convection. Despite their simplicity these turbulent convective recipes appear to remove many of the difficulties that radiative codes faced. In particular, the numerical modelling of double mode pulsations has become possible.

The State of Cepheid Pulsation Theory

We review the current state of Cepheid modeling and discuss its dominant deficiency, namely the use of time dependent mixing length. Notwithstanding, Cepheid modeling has achieved some excellent successes, and we mention some of the most recent ones. Discrepancies between observations and modeling appear not so much in the gross properties of single mode Cepheids, but rather when more subtle no...

Numerical Investigation of Double- Diffusive Mixed Convective Flow in a Lid-Driven Enclosure Filled with Al2O3-Water Nanofluid

Double-diffusive mixed convection in a lid-driven square enclosure filled with Al2O3-water is numerically investigated. Two-dimensional nonlinear governing equations are discretized using the control volume method and hybrid scheme. The equations are solved using SIMPLER algorithm. The results are displayed in the form of streamlines, isotherms, and iso-concentrations when the Richardson number...
