We prove that in the adiabatic limit the motion of the charged particle is governed by a e ective Hamiltonian. To next order one has to add as a small correction the relativistically covariant radiation reaction. This third order equation has a repulsive center manifold and the true solution is well approximated by a trajectory on the center manifold. We also prove that in the adiabatic limit the elds are derived from the Li enard{Wiechert potentials of a moving point charge and that the radiated energy is given by Larmor's formula.

Long-time Asymptotics for the Coupled Maxwell-lorentz Equations

We determine the long time behavior of solutions to the Maxwell-Lorentz equations, which describe a charge coupled to the electromagnetic eld and subject to external time-independent potentials. The stationary solutions have vanishing magnetic eld and a Coulomb type electrostatic eld centered at the points of the set Z at which the external force vanishes. We prove that solutions of nite energy...

Runaway Charged Particles and Center Manifolds

We consider the coupled Maxwell{Lorentz equations for a single charge with a rigid charge distribution subject to slowly varying external potentials. In the adiabatic limit, to lowest order, the motion of the charge is governed by an eeective Hamiltonian. In the next order we obtain, as a small correction, the radiation reaction containing q {terms. This equation has a stable center manifold an...

On the initial-value problem of the Maxwell-Lorentz equations

We consider the Maxwell-Lorentz equations, i.e., the equation of motion of a charged dust coupled to Maxwell’s equations, on an arbitrary general-relativistic spacetime. We decompose this system of equations into evolution equations and constraints, and we demonstrate that the evolution equations are strongly hyperbolic. This result guarantees that the initial-value problem of the Maxwell-Loren...

On low energy quantum gravity induced effects on the propagation of light

Present models describing the interaction of quantum Maxwell and gravitational fields predict a breakdown of Lorentz invariance and a non standard dispersion relation in the semiclassical approximation. Comparison with observational data however, does not support their predictions. In this work we introduce a different set of ab initio assumptions in the canonical approach, namely that the homo...

0 The harmonic gauge condition in the gravitomagnetic equations

It has been asserted in the literature that the analogy between the linear and first order slow motion approximation of Einstein equations of General Relativity (grav-itomagnetic equations) and the Maxwell-Lorentz equations of electrodynamics breaks down if the gravitational potentials are time dependent. In this work, we show that this assertion is not correct and it has arisen from an incorre...
