Effects of Deicers on Concrete Deterioration

چکیده
Concrete specimens were exposed to weekly cycles of wetting and drying in distilled water and in solutions of sodium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and calcium magnesium acetate with either a 6.04 molal ion concentration, equivalent in ion concentration to a 15% solution of NaCl, or a 1.06 molal ion concentration, equivalent in ion concentration to a 3% solution of NaCl, for periods of up to 95 weeks. Specimens were also exposed to air only. The effects of exposure were evaluated based on changes in the dynamic modulus of elasticity and the physical appearance of the specimens at the conclusion of the tests. Concretes exposed to distilled water and air show, respectively, an increase and a decrease in dynamic modulus of elasticity, due principally to changes in moisture content; overall, no negative impact on the concrete properties of these specimens is observed. At lower concentrations, sodium chloride and calcium chloride have a relatively small negative impact on the properties of concrete. At high concentrations, sodium chloride has a greater but still relatively small negative effect. At low concentrations, magnesium chloride and calcium magnesium acetate can cause measurable damage to concrete. At high concentrations, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and calcium magnesium acetate cause significant changes in concrete that result in loss of material and a reduction in stiffness and strength.

Deicer Impacts on Pavement Materials: Introduction and Recent Developments
A review of the impacts of deicers used in winter maintenance practices of Portland cement concrete and asphalt concrete roadways and airport pavements is presented. Traditional and relatively new deicers are incorporated in this review, including sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, calcium magnesium acetate, potassium acetate, potassium formate, sodium acetate, and sodium fo...
متن کاملFreeze–thaw damage and chemical change of a portland cement concrete in the presence of diluted deicers
The present study experimentally investigates the effect of different diluted deicers on concrete deterioration. Laboratory simulations of environmental freeze/thaw cycling were first conducted on Portland cement concrete specimens in the presence of various deicers (NaCl, K-formate, NaClbased deicer, K-acetate-based deicer, Na-acetate/Naformate blend deicer, CMA deicer, or MgCl2 liquid deicer)...
متن کاملPCC Pavement Deterioration and Expansive Mineral Growth
In order to evaluate the importance of newly-formed minerals in the premature deterioration of Iowa highway concrete, a two-phase study was undertaken. In the first phase, we performed petrographic and SEM/EDAX analyses to determine chemical and mineralogical changes in the aggregate and cement paste of samples taken from Iowa concrete highways that showed premature deterioration. In the second...
متن کاملThe Effects of Concrete Pavement Mix Design Parameters on Durability under Freeze and Thaw Condition
This paper is based on an experimental research that examined the effects of concrete`s major parameters on durability of concrete pavements and curbs under freezing and thawing cycles. These parameters include concrete mix design parameters such as water-cement ratio, fine aggregate percentage and using air entraining admixture and simulating real freeze-thaw cycles that infrastructures underg...
متن کاملPolymer Impregnation of Concrete by Methyl Methacrylate and its Effects on Mechanical Properties and Corrosion of Steel in Concrete
Freezing and thawing resulting from the ingression of water into concrete causes cracking or spalling. Corrosive ions such as chloride or sulfate penetrate the concrete surface and eventually reach the reinforcing steel. This causes the steel to corrode. Because of the high maintenance and replacement costs, responsible officials should be increasingly concerned about the growing number...
