چکیده

Geographic information is commonly disseminated and consumed via visual representations of features and their environmental context on maps. Map design inherently involves generalizing reality, and one method by which mapmakers do so is through the use of symbols to represent features. Here we focus on the challenges associated with supporting mapmakers who need to work together to reach consensus on standardizing their map symbols. On the basis of a needs assessment study with mapmakers at the US Department of Homeland Security, we designed a new, mixed-method symbol standardization process that takes place through a web-based, asynchronous platform. A study to test this new standardization process with mapmakers at DHS revealed that our process allowed participants to identify many issues related to symbol design, meaning, and categorization. The approach elicited sustained, iterative engagement and critical thinking from participants, and results from a poststudy survey indicate that participants found it to be useful and usable. Results from our study and user feedback allow us to suggest multiple ways in which our approach and platform can be improved for future

Symbol-by-symbol MAP demodulation of CPM and PSK signals on Rayleigh flat-fading channels

Demodulation using the symbol-by-symbol maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) algorithm is presented. The algorithm is derived for the case of continuous phase modulation (CPM) signals transmitted over Rayleigh flat-fading channels, and a corresponding receiver structure is specified. It is shown that the MAP algorithm requires computing, for each trellis branch, the sum of the products of the...

Iterative APPA Symbol Timing Recovery for Turbo-coded Systems

This paper examines the problem of symbol timing recovery and decoding in turbo-coded systems. The large coding gain of Turbo-codes enables reliable communications at very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, the application of turbo coding exacerbates the problem of timing recovery due to its very low operating SNRs. Therefore we propose a new concept: ‘apriori probability aided’ symbol t...

An EM-based MAP detector for CPM signals transmitted over frequency-flat fading channels

In this paper the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation of a random vector is applied to the problem of symbol detection for CPM signals transmitted over timeselective Ftayleigh fading channels. This results in a soft-in soft-out (SISO) detection algorithm suitable for iterative detection/decoding schemes. Simulation results show that the error perfor...

Optimal Power Management to Minimize SER in Amplify and-Forward Relay Networks

This paper studies optimal power allocation to minimize symbol error rate (SER) of amplify-and-forward cooperative diversity networks. First, we analytically solve optimal power allocation problem to minimize SER for three different scenarios, namely, multi-branch single-relay, single-branch multi-relay and multi-branch multi-relay cooperative diversity networks, all subject to a given total re...

Iterative correction of ISI via equalization and decoding with priors - International Symposium on Information Theory, 2000. Proceedings. IEEE

Abstmct An iterative algorithm is presented for joint equalization and decoding of data that has been transmitted over intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. This differs from well-known “turbo e q u a l h tion” (TEQ) methods, in that the IS1 is removed with a soft-input soft-output (SISO) equalizer via linear or decision feedback equalization (DFE). The data is encoded with a convolutional c...
