Kinetic Characterization of Surface-Initiated Photoiniferter-Mediated Photopolymerization in Presence of Tetraethylthiuram Disulfide

چکیده
Introduction. Modification of surfaces with covalently grafted polymer brushes is a widely used technique to tailor surface properties such as wettability, biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and lubricity. In the current work, surface-tethered poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layers were produced via surface-initiated photoiniferter-mediated photopolymerization (SI-PMP). Photoiniferters, based on dithiocarbamate chemistries are often utilized as photoinitiators for “living” radical polymerizations in bulk or solution. However; it has been found that, due to a low concentration of deactivating radicals, SIPMP of methyl methacrylate suffers from irreversible termination reactions, which lead to cessation of polymerization. Therefore, to suppress the extent of irreversible termination reaction, a source of deactivating dithiocarbamyl species, tetraethylthiuram disulfide (TED), was added to the reaction mixture. The presented work is focused on investigating the impact of TED on the surface-tethered chain growth and the ability of this strategy to preserve active ends during brush formation to allow creation of block copolymers.

Impact of Added Tetraethylthiuram Disulfide Deactivator on the Kinetics of Growth and Reinitiation of Poly(methyl methacrylate) Brushes Made by Surface-Initiated Photoiniferter-Mediated Photopolymerization
Without intervention, it has been found that surface-initiated photoiniferter-mediated photopolymerization (SI-PMP) of methyl methacrylate suffers from irreversible termination, which leads to cessation of polymerization. These irreversible termination reactions were successfully reduced by preaddition of tetraethylthiuram disulfide (TED). The poly(methyl methacrylate) layers were also reinitia...

Dibutyl-Disulfide Montmorillonite (DD-MMT) was synthesized successfully and found to bean excellent adsorbent for Hg(II) removal. The fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR),x-ray diffraction spectrum (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used tocharacterize properties of the absorbent. The effects of several parameters such as solutionpH, adsorbent dose, contact time and the...
متن کاملKinetic Study of Ethyl Mercaptan Oxidation in Presence of Merox Catalyst
Mercaptans are commonly present in petroleum products. Their foul odor and highly corrosive nature make them the most undesirable sulfur compounds so they should be removed because of environmental issues. Merox process is used for oxidation of mercaptans to disulfide using air in the presence of alkaline solution and Merox catalyst. In this paper, due to lack of information about the kinet...
