Coronal Heating versus Solar Wind Acceleration
نویسنده
چکیده
Parker’s initial insights from 1958 provided a key causal link between the heating of the solar corona and the acceleration of the solar wind. However, we still do not know what fraction of the solar wind’s mass, momentum, and energy flux is driven by Parker-type gas pressure gradients, and what fraction is driven by, e.g., wave-particle interactions or turbulence. SOHO has been pivotal in bringing these ideas back to the forefront of coronal and solar wind research. This paper reviews our current understanding of coronal heating in the context of the acceleration of the fast and slow solar wind. For the fast solar wind, a recent model of Alfvén wave generation, propagation, and non-WKB reflection is presented and compared with UVCS, SUMER, radio, and in situ observations at the last solar minimum. The derived fractions of energy and momentum addition from thermal and nonthermal processes are found to be consistent with various sets of observational data. For the more chaotic slow solar wind, the relative roles of steady streamer-edge flows (as emphasized by UVCS abundance analysis) versus bright blob structures (seen by LASCO) need to be understood before the relation between streamer heating and and slow-wind acceleration can be known with certainty. Finally, this presentation summarizes the need for nextgeneration remote-sensing observations that can supply the tight constraints needed to unambiguously characterize the dominant physics.

Wave Modeling of the Solar Wind
The acceleration and heating of the solar wind have been studied for decades using satellite observations and models. However, the exact mechanism that leads to solar wind heating and acceleration is poorly understood. In order to improve the understanding of the physical mechanisms that are involved in these processes a combination of modeling and observational analysis is required. Recent mod...
متن کاملSelf-consistent Coronal Heating and Solar Wind Acceleration from Anisotropic Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence
We present a series of models for the plasma properties along open magnetic flux tubes rooted in solar coronal holes, streamers, and active regions. These models represent the first self-consistent solutions that combine: (1) chromospheric heating driven by an empirically guided acoustic wave spectrum, (2) coronal heating from Alfvén waves that have been partially reflected, then damped by anis...
متن کاملCoronal heating and wind acceleration by nonlinear Alfvén waves – global simulations with gravity, radiation, and conduction
We review our recent results of global onedimensional (1-D) MHD simulations for the acceleration of solar and stellar winds. We impose transverse photospheric motions corresponding to the granulations, which generate outgoing Alfvén waves. We treat the propagation and dissipation of the Alfvén waves and consequent heating from the photosphere by dynamical simulations in a self-consistent manner...
متن کاملHeating and Acceleration of the Solar Plasma
This tutorial focuses on basic physical concepts relevant to the heating of the corona and acceleration of the solar wind. We begin with a discussion of observations of the solar wind and solar corona and then develop a simple theoretical framework that allows us to explore some implications of the observations. Next we turn to observations of the lower solar atmosphere and their implications f...
متن کاملCoronal Holes and the Solar Wind
Coronal holes are the darkest regions of the ultraviolet and X-ray Sun, both on the disk and above the limb. Coronal holes are associated with rapidly expanding open magnetic fields and the acceleration of the high-speed solar wind. This paper reviews measurements of the plasma properties of coronal holes and how these measurements have been used to put constraints on theoretical models of coro...
